I just installed openSUSE 10.3 because the DVD for 11.1 wasn't booting. Actually, my ultimate goal is to install Slackware, but that's also on a DVD and won't boot. However, while I have 10.3, I would like to update it a bit.
The update manager says that I have 276 mandatory updates, but when I tell it to update, it takes about a minute and then says to restart. Which does nothing, as I have the same amount of updates afterward. I manually updated a few programs such as Firefox, and that brought the total mandatory updates down to the aforementioned number. It was originally at 280. This has an older YaST2 as well, which doesn't have the update category that allows viewing of all possible updates and to choose what to update and what not to. Can I update YaST2 to the latest version on 10.3? I don't want YaST to stop working completely. I like some things in 10.3 better than 11.1 (which I have on a desktop). Such as the GDM. In 10.3, it makes you type in your user name; in 11.1, you click on your user name. I've been trying in vain to figure out a way to make it behave as in 10.3 for my 11.1 desktop. This isn't the place for it, but if anyone has any idea why my laptop (IBM ThinkPad R40) isn't booting from DVD's, please feel free to flex your knowledge. The bootable CD I made (ISO taken from IBM's site) to get a firmware update didn't boot either, though. I know at least that the Slackware install DVD works because it booted on my Acer. Yes the drive says CD-RW/DVD ROM on it. |

Not in this version. Here is what it looks like:
![]() So yes, I can disable other repositories, but it doesn't allow me to just update. I have to go through each and every package and see if it is able to be updated. The package manager in 11.1 is far easier in most regards. |

All right, so I got it down to three updates. I clicked 'Details' in the updater prompt box. Then it showed me which packages were waiting to be updated, and asked me what to do when it found dependency errors.
I skipped the ones that had errors and the rest updated. The ones that had issues were Pidgin, Finch, and libpurple. I don't know what they need. The software manager in openSUSE 11.1 is very clear about these things, but this one doesn't give me any info as to why it's not updating. P.S. Still having the other issues mentioned. |

Crumbs I can't remember it looking like that.
It is sometimes better to quit the updater, ask it not to start at boot, then reboot, then: Have you tried a su terminal and doing Code:
zypper ref Code:
zypper up

It says basically the same thing as the YaST software manager:

I wish someone with 10.3 would answer in this. I know you are out there!
What do you get from a terminal with Code:
zypper lr

There are some core components (such libzypp, zypper and yast modules) that need to be updated first. Then, you can go on with the rest of the package updates. > This has an older YaST2 as well, which doesn't have the update category > that allows viewing of all possible updates and to choose what to update > and what not to. Well, you can "right click" on the list of packages and select "update if a newer version is available". I used to do that way for updating the whole kde environment. Remember that openSUSE 10.3 does not support by default "lzma" compression so you cannot install any package "designed" for openSUSE 11.0 or openSUSE 11.1. > I like some things in 10.3 better than 11.1 (which I have on a > desktop). Dunno, but gnome repo is only available for 11.1 so no chance you can update gnome to 2.26, at least using OBS :-( Greetings, -- Camaleón |

Well no, it never "went on" with anything. It told me to restart and then it refreshed the list of updates and it would have the same number of updates as before. I figured out that it was because a few of the packages weren't installing due to dependency issues. So just those ones need to be updated now. |

Nothing you should worry about :-) Note: you cannot add opensuse 11.0 nor 11.1 repos, you have to stay with opensuse 10.3 repos or compile the packages your self ;-) Greetings, -- Camaleón |
