Default Wrong icons in KDE

edit: Oops, just realized I posted in the wrong subforum, and now I can't even delete the post Maybe someone could be kind enough to move it.

-----

Just installed openSUSE 11.1 with KDE.

Some icons seem to be wrong though.. For example the shutdown and logoff buttons on the panel are both shown as a small computer. If I open Dolphin and go to Configure Toolbars, "About KDE" has 15 small K-icons on top of eachother instead of just 1.

However, if I log in as root these icons appear as they're supposed to.

I chose different passwords for my account and root during install, but otherwise I can't think of any differences between them except default ownership.

It is a bit beside your question, but you should NEVER login as root in the GUI.

did you preform ALL installation media checks as suggested in
http://tinyurl.com/6jwtg9?

that is, did you run md5sum against the iso before you burned it and
then checked the disk itself using the CD/DVD's media check??

i ask because it sure _sounds_like_ something got scrambled in the
install process, *if* you in fact "Just installed"..

oh, you know, though you didn't say i bet you installed
KDE4.1--unfortunately there is little way to guess what that bucket of
bugs is gonna do..

there are some here who are expert in getting it to work (or updating
to KDE4.2.x or KDE4.3 Beta, that might work)..

i'll suggest you either wait for them to show up or check your media
and then install KDE3 (which is mature, solid and reliable....but
whose days are numbered...Gnome is also solid..)

the forum's search engine can lead you to many posts dealing with the
frailties of KDE4.x and the huge variety of 'fixes' available....as
well as how to also install and switch to using KDE3 and/or Gnome..

Ahh, hehe, I solved the mystery.. I must've changed icon theme to Crystal SVG instead of using the default Oxygen. That's what happens when you install new OS:es in the middle of the night when you can't sleep

Henk: I had some problems with X (After Catalyst installation failed halfways due to lacking Linux Kernel source, but the icon problem was present from the first login) so I just ran startx to test. So usually I never login as root

It is allright. It seems that you know what you are doing in this respect. I only try to keep beginners from starting bad habits.

Enjoy SUSE!

absolutely.. I must've forgot that I clicked around in the options before going to bed last night

Guess I made quite a bad first impression.. Both posting in the wrong forum and asking for help with something I changed myself heh

actually not SO bad...at least you didn't try to hide your
misstep...so many seem to want to make their own mistakes appear to
have been done *to* them by some evil lurking in the bowels of openSUSE..

you did good in that respect and some others:
- you are willing to try
- you recognized and admitted error in posting to the wrong place
- you asked someone to fix that
- you didn't throw up your hands a go away screaming when the multiple
icons popped up
- you didn't format and re-install *before* seeing competent assistance
- you seem to be willing to actually listen and accept logical advice

welcome
