I will use the term upgrading when changing versions. Updating occurs almost daily for security issues. You can also update via YaST various packages or all packages depending on the repositories you have configured. A DVD upgrade is possible. Your success at upgrading will depend on the configuration of your system. Some systems upgrade just fine while others collapse into a pile of molten slag. In general, I don't recommend upgrading, rather keeping your /home system on a separate device/partition and performing a clean install on which you can then mount your user directory. |

There's a Net Installation/Upgrade CD to, which lets you download only what's needed.
zypper dup (like apt dist-upgrade) may also be supported in 11.2, providing a live upgrade option from text console. Whilst a backup will always be recommended, it is recognised that "ease of upgrading" is important, and so it is supported (and tested). Planning a spare alternative boot area, and trying out upgrade on 11.2 Alpha & Beta submitting bug reports, will help make the 11.2 upgrade work for more users. |
