It is not possible to do system upgrades with the Live-CDs.

For some reason my system runs 11.0 but will not even boot off of the 11.1 Live CD. Any ideas why this would be the case? I did have to do a fair bit of manual configuration for my Matrox Video card when I installed 11.0 but I was able to boot from the Live CD using just one monitor

Booting off the Live CD has nothing to do with what is installed on the PC, it is purely a question of a couple of settings within the BIOS on the PC. Normally you can press a button (F8?? or similar - there should be a prompt) to get to the BBS menu and select where you want to boot from... or if you enter the BIOS setup itself, you can configure the standard boot order.
