From ver 9 something to 10.3 I have been running gnome. I am about to install ver 11.0. I have decided that I want to run KDE. Is there anything special I should do, or just select KDE during the install?

If you are installing OpenSUSE 11.0 with a blank install, rather than updating from your last version, all you neeed to do is select KDE3.5 of KDE4 instead of Gnome. IF you want to install both Gnome and KDE, you can do that as well. Here's a tutorial to install Gnome and KDE, and switch between the two when you want to.
