I apologize for the confusion with two topics in this thread. I can open a new thread for the wireless issue, but it sounds like we may be close to resolving it. The alsa-driver-unstable-kmp-pae-1.0.21.20091030_2.6.27.37_0.1-4.1 driver is still showing in my list after performing the latest commands, oldcpu. I checked to make sure the DVD and multimedia repositories were not in my list. Still no sound. |

Please remove it now. Then reboot. |

Well, it looks like the issue with wireless is now resolved, thanks to the help of lwfinger. The module is now loading at boot time and my saved network was autoconnected after reboot. Thanks!
More info on the sound to come. |

Ok, some additional info on the sound problem.
I used YAST to remove the alsa-driver-unstable-kmp-pae-1.0.21.20091030_2.6.27.37_0.1-4.1 driver. Confirmed that it's no longer listed and rebooted. Still no sound from speakers. I do, however note that I get sound if I have headphones plugged in. I can't say whether this is new or not since I didn't think to test it initially. I am rerunning the alsa-info script and commands oldcpu request earlier to see if the info has changed in a meaningful way to you. Here is the new alsa info. Quote:

Are you selecting NO to the request to change vendor? You should select YES. It just makes no sense. All I can suggest is download from here Index of /repositories/multimedia:/libs/openSUSE_11.1/i586 these rpms to your hard drive :
and then from a terminal in the directory where you downloaded them, with root permissions update to them with: Code:
rpm -Uhv alsa-1.0.21-49.1.i586.rpm alsa-docs-1.0.21-49.1.i586.rpm alsa-oss-1.0.17-27.3.i586.rpm alsa-plugins-1.0.21-19.4.i586.rpm alsa-plugins-pulse-1.0.21-19.4.i586.rpm alsa-tools-1.0.21-6.3.i586.rpm alsa-utils-1.0.21-15.3.i586.rpm libasound2-1.0.21-49.1.i586.rpm alsa-firmware-1.0.20-5.1.noarch.rpm Code:
SuSEconfig Code:
ldconfig I don't use that "rpm -Uvh .... " command very often. I do not think there are commas between each rpm ... but my memory is rusty here. If you have a syntax problem, please advise. If that install is successful, but sound does not work, we can try to force a configuration into your /etc/modprobe.d/sound file, although the auto probe of alsa sound driver upon boot should work. There is a risk that your removing the alsa-driver-unstable-kmp-pae AFTER you updated the alsa-driver-kmp-pae has caused a further problem, as it should have been removed BEFORE, but I honestly do not know if that is the case. Reference sound working in headset but not speakers, that is not unusual. One of the alsa developers once told me that it is MUCH easier for a developer to get the sound driver code working in headphones than it is in speakers. |

Its possible you may need to delete and re-install alsa-driver-kmp-pae. The reason being there may be an overlap between the alsa-driver-unstable-kmp-pae that was inappropriately installed, and by removing it AFTER the alsa-driver-kmp-pae was updated, you could have removed something inadvertently that the alsa-driver-kmp needs. So I recommend: (1) remove alsa-driver-kmp-pae (2) re-install alsa-driver-kmp-pae. Do NOT install alsa-driver-unstable-pae. CHECK to ensure you do not install it by mistake (3) reboot, and test. (4) if no sound in speakers, then try making an update to your /etc/modprobe.d/sound file as described below to force an audio configuration upon boot. The diagnostic script that you ran, identified your PC's hardware audio codec as a CX20561 (hermosa). I believe that is the same as a Conexant 5051 which was renamed to CX20561. If that is correct, then there are predefined model configurations that can be forced, if the alsa driver auto probe does not work appropriately upon boot. The list from the alsa 1.0.21 HD-Audio-Models.txt file has this for the Conexant 5051: Code:
Conexant 5051 ============= laptop Basic Laptop config (default) hp HP Spartan laptop hp-dv6736 HP dv6736 lenovo-x200 Lenovo X200 laptop To try them, you need to edit your PC's /etc/modprobe.d/sound file. Lets try the model "laptop" from that above list first. To do this open the file with root permissions. You can do this
Code:
options snd-hda-intel model=laptop options snd slots=snd-hda-intel # M71A.fSQZAcZzQX5:MCP78S [GeForce 8200] High Definition Audio alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel If "laptop" does not give speaker sound, then again change the /etc/modprobe.d/sound file, replacing "laptop" with "hp" (the next item in the list). Save the change. Then restart your alsa sound driver by typing: su -c 'rcalsasound restart' and restart your mixer (kmix in KDE and alsamixer in Gnome) and test your sound. If "hp" does not work, try the next entry in the list (hp-dv6736). Try each of the 4 items in the list, stopping only IF your speaker sound works. If after all of that it still does not work, remove that line from the /etc/modprobe.d/sound file, and please restart your PC, and then in your /home/username directory, as a regular user, immediately after restarting your PC, with your PC connected to the internet, run: Code:
dmesg > dmesg.txt && curl -F file=@dmesg.txt nopaste.com/a If I do not find anything there, we are into bug writing territory (and also at that point, and only at that point, possibly into experimenting with disabling pulse audio). |

A silly question.
Does your laptop PC have an audio enable/disable in BIOS ? If so, please ensure sound is enabled. Windoze tends to ignore that BIOS setting, but Linux will use it, and often if sound is disabled in BIOS, Windoze sound will work and Linux sound fail. |
