Wireless internet

Is it normal that my wireless internet disconnects every couple of hours?

I'm using openSUSE 11.1 on a Toshiba L355-S7915

Just to note it's not my actual internet, because I check the modems and all the lights are properly lighted.

No it's not normal.

I take it you have established this is not a signal strength issue? You say 2hrs. Is that just a thereabouts 2hrs or quite literal? Is this a secure connection with no other similar wireless access points near by?

It varies, but it's between 2-4hours, sometimes a little more (I think the most its done is 6).

And yeah it's not because my wireless modem is less than 20 feet away. I can literally be right next to it.

And as far as I know we have the only wireless network around here.

I tried looking up the Hardware specs for the wireless in your laptop, {chuckle}... "Realtek 802.11bg"...REAL useful.

I'd like to see what brand/model wireless card you have. I have had problems with my wireless dropping out constantly, especially under high loads (grrr!). I've got an Atheros b/g/n card in my laptop, so using the ath9k drivers, which seem to be spotty as originally supplied. Installing 'compat-wireless' from

has (knock on wood!) solved my issues.

(I've probably just jinxed myself by saying that though... {sigh})

The Atheros people have done a lot of recent work on the ath9k driver. All of
their changes are in compat-wireless. It certainly is better than any driver in
2.6.31.
