All the way at the bottom, it mentions "no screens found" as the fatal server error. So unfortunately I didn't get to the step of changing the configuration, but I hope this gives you a hint of how to proceed.

Thank you,
Vinay

From other users experiences, Xorg configuration with sax2 and the intel driver seems to be problematic. If you can, try a manual edit of /etc/X11/xorg.conf file (as root of course).

Based on that 'intel' xorg.conf file you posted, it included a modeline for "1366x768" in the modes section:

Quote:
Section "Monitor"
Option "CalcAlgorithm" "XServerPool"
DisplaySize 270 152
HorizSync 46-49
Identifier "Monitor[0]"
ModelName "1366X768@60HZ"
Option "DPMS"
Option "PreferredMode" "1366x768"
VendorName "--> LCD"
VertRefresh 59-61
UseModes "Modes[0]"
EndSection

Section "Modes"
Identifier "Modes[0]"
Modeline "1366x768" 85.86 1368 1440 1584 1800 768 769 772 795
EndSection
You may need to force Xorg to use the included modeline(s) by disabling any automatic detection via EDID with

Quote:
Option "IgnoreEDID" "on"
Option "NoDDC" "on"
See how that goes.

Hi again,

thanks for the hint. I was a bit afraid to mess with xorg.conf as it said I shouldn't edit it, in capitals to make sure they got my attention.

Anyway, it didn't work unfortunately. The section in xorg.conf now looks like:

Code:
Section "Monitor"
Option "CalcAlgorithm" "XServerPool"
DisplaySize 270 152
HorizSync 46-49
Identifier "Monitor[0]"
ModelName "1366X768@60HZ"
Option "DPMS"
Option "PreferredMode" "1366x768"
Option "IgnoreEDID" "on"
Option "NoDDC" "on"
VendorName "--> LCD"
VertRefresh 59-61
UseModes "Modes[0]"
EndSection
but it didn't do anything to the screen. Did I put those lines in the wrong spot?

Thanks again,
Vinay

Hi there,

this morning I did follow Deano's instructions, but didn't try to perform Knurpht's instructions (from post #9) after that. I just did now and they actually did work. That is, sax2 did run but it was no different from when I just start sax2 from the graphical environment (Windowmaker in my case). The screen is still stretched as it was from the beginning. Also it keeps going back to some AUO screen, even though I set it back to the LCD with the proper ratio every time and set the ratio to 16:9 in the next tab.

Anyone still got a clue?

Cheers,
Vinay

Once you make custom edits to xorg.conf, it is not advisable to run sax2 at all -it may simply delete or alter your edits.

These two options

Option "IgnoreEDID" "on"
Option "NoDDC" "on"

normally go in the device section (but I'm not sure if it matters).

I'm a bit confused about this bit. Is this occurring when you try to configure monitor via sax2?

Are you able to get a desktop at the desired 1366x768 resolution? Can you post your entire current xorg.conf? You may wish to upload it to pastebin and just include the link to it in your post.

Hm, I just came here to say that I do not know how to solve your problem :/
Basically this is a problem related to the fact that the driver for the graphics chipset in our aspire ones (I have a 751h) is all messed up and only works in Ubuntu (apparently because Dell was committed to making it work). As I prefer openSuse to (X/K)Ubuntu, I decided to stick to this favorite in spite of the stretchy screen.

Here are some links related to the issue:
https://features.opensuse.org/306413
AdamW on Linux and more » Blog Archive » Poulsbo update

I have tried to build the .src.rpm files pointed to by the text in this second link, but the whole process did not work because some fc11 packages were necessary. However, as suggested by the comments by toalex77, someone was able to make it work in the beginning of this month.

I am also interested in getting a working package, but not so devoted into actually making it work, so I would appreciate if some drivers could pop up into my package list Maybe you want to vote up for the feature I pointed to above.

Cheers

Hi obernardo. Have you tried testing your hardware with openSUSE 11.2 M7 or simlilar? Might be worth a go, as it uses later Xorg release. Disappointing if its still a mess...

Hi,

sorry for my late response. I left the computer alone for a while, focus a bit on different stuff. Anyway, I put the two lines suggested by Deano in the "Device" section and didn't run SaX afterwards.

/etc/X11/xorg.conf looks like this now:

A bit disappointing to find out that is bound to fail as Obernardo implies. And still, the author of the instructions on the SuSE site does it on exactly the same Acer 751h with exactly the same SuSE 11.1. Should be possible to get it to work, right?

Cheers,
Vinay

Hi vinay_r. Although you added these options

Option "IgnoreEDID" "on"
Option "NoDDC" "on"

you don't appear to have

1)any modelines included (in modes section)
2)your graphics driver (in device section) is shown as 'Driver "fbdev"'

so I wouldn't expect that to work properly. The first 2 options are included to explicitly use manual modelines where included.

Hi Deano,

to be honest configuring the system like this is still a bit like magic to me. Do you have any suggestions for modelines and what I should set as graphics driver? As for the latter, that would probably be the one Obernando is looking for as well.

Thank you,
Vinay
