Thumbs down No sound at Acer TravelMate 8000

Hi,
Im a total new in the Linux world so this is my attempt to move from windows.
I have a acer TravelMate where I have installed openSUSE 11.1 (love it ).But I have problem with the sound, no sound at all.

I run the "alsa script" so if someone can give me a hint to solve the problem with the information stored in the address below.
http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=6b...47fd73d0a99741

I followed the troubleshooting guide at the forum without result.

Frankly, this is puzzling. Your sound should be working.

I did a search on the Alsa web site, and saw no update entries for the ALC202, which is what the script indicates is the hardware audio codec for your Acer TravelMate 8000. Hence the current alsa version should work with your laptop (your openSUSE has a 1.0.17/1.0.18 version of alsa).

What are you using for a speaker test? Please try EACH of the 3 speaker tests called up in the audio troubleshooting guide: SDB:AudioTroubleshooting - openSUSE (ie the 2 speaker tests, and also the test on the alsa web page). If ANY of those work, then your basic sound functionality is OK, and any application sound problems are probably codec or application specific.

I also note this in your laptop's mixer:

!!Amixer output
!!-------------
!!-------Mixer controls for card 0 [I82801DBICH4]
Card hw:0 'I82801DBICH4'/'Intel 82801DB-ICH4 with ALC202 at irq 10'
Mixer name : 'Realtek ALC202 rev 0'
Simple mixer control 'PCM',0
Front Left: Playback 18 [58%] [-7.50dB] [on]
Front Right: Playback 18 [58%] [-7.50dB] [on]
58% is quite low for some laptops, as some laptops the volume control is not linear, but one only gets sound at the upper end of the control scale. So please move up your PCM volume controls to a VERY high figure (say 95%) and once you have sound established, you can back off to a lower figure to reduce distortion.

We can look at updating alsa (and I can provide you the command for that), but before trying that, I think it would be useful for you to check your sound a bit further. Also note there is a bug in opensUSE-11.1 pulse audio, and the bug causes sound to often be muted during a reboot. So please check your mixer after every reboot to ensure sound is not muted.

OK, glad to read you have it working.

What do you mean by a "reinstallation of the sound drivers"? Can you be more specific? Did you update to 1.0.20 of alsa?
