Xorg hogging CPU with fglrx & ATI Mobility Radeon X1300

I am seeing serious issues with constant CPU usage after upgrading to 11.1 and installing the ATI proprietary drivers.

My system is and IBM lenovo T60 with the ATI Mobility Radeon X1300 video chipset.

Xorg is eating well over 95% of the CPU at all times. I am using a very default, unmodified SaX2 configuration for X.

I would be fine with not using the fglrx driver at all, as I think it is probably the source of the problem, but I don't seem to be able to run video with any other driver.

Trying:

sax2 -m 0=fbdev

Simply gets me a blank, grey screen. It won't work with the default xorg.conf that was working on initial installation either.

I am running the following kernel:

2.6.27.21-0-pae

Does anyone know what's going on here? It's difficult to keep trying different configurations, since every time I try to run SaX with some other driver, I end up with a grey screen of death and have to reboot.
