Default why network card do not work?

i have just install opensuse 11 on my laptop (Dell D620),every thing is ok except the network card.
my network card is Broadcom BCM57XX Gigabit Ethernet, using "ifconfig" and "ethtool",I can see that the driver had been installed correctly, but the network do not work.
then i find that the network card's lamp is down! why?,on windows platform it work very well.

What is the output to the following commands:
route
ifconfig
cat /etc/resolv.conf

Also, are you trying to connect using DHCP or static ip addressing?
