Default rw dvds not recognized

Hi

I've just installed hl-dt-st cdrw dvd gcch30n into my Dell Presision T7400 and while it recognises and writes to cdroms, it doesn't recognise blank dvds it will read from dvds but not write to them

I'm running opensuse 11.1 (64bit)
when I ordered the device I remember asking for one that could write to blank dvd's but I wonder if either the issue is that I have a read only dvd device or if opensuse just can handle it. I've searched he web for this model but not found anything.

tia

What application are you using for burning?

Is the drive SATA or older PATA IDE?
If the latter, it it alone on it's IDE cable?
