HDMI Audio

I have a new desktop built on a Gigabyte GA-MA785G-UD3H mobo.

Sound (alsa) is up to date.

Analog outputs work (speaker jacks).
I have not tested SPDIF yet.

I get notification sound thru HDMI (start up, shut down jingles) but am unable to get application audio via HDMI.
My test application is Amarok

I hope someone else chimes in. Audio with HDMI did not work on my Dell Studio 1537 laptop last I tried (about 9 months ago) and I have not tried since (I don't have an easy test setup). My new Asus P6T Deluxe V2 also outputs HDMI, but again I have no test setup to check. Hence I really can NOT help.

If it were me, thou, I would pay very careful to the IEC958 controls to ensure none are muted. I see you have some muted.

I am interpreting the IEC958 controls associated with the SBx00 (Device "sound card 0") to be controls for the SPDIF interface. The IEC958 associated with the RS780 device ("sound card 1") is ON and un-muted in the Kmix check box; this is the HDMI path.
These are both embedded devices, of course.

I have shifted my test strategy a bit, just to make sure everything else works. I Moved my DV7 laptop into this test, as it dual boots Vista and also has an RS780 HDMI interface.

Under Vista, hot plugging the HDMI brings up a (cloned) dual screen display on the DLP. Audio works thru the HDMI and I can play a DVD with Media center. The Vista based ATI Catalyst Center provides good control for the two screens.

So now I know the DV7 hardware works and the DLP works.

I rebooted to 11.1 running 2.6.27.29-0.1-default kernel and up to date alsa.
I can hot plug the HDMI (to DLP display) and bring up a cloned desktop. The ATI Catalyst set up (/usr/bin/amdcccle) is essentially the same as under Vista and I have great control of resolutions and enable/disable for each display.

I am getting the boot up and log out *.wav sounds thru the HDMI, but Amarok CD sound and DVD player sound (Mplayer)are still just playing thru the laptop speakers and not the HDMI-DLP interface.

I will continue to bang on it and report back.

Now thats interesting. If using KDE4, you can configure various sound devices via Configure Desktop > Multimedia. Here you can select the output device preferences for system notifications, video, music etc. Hope this helps.

I have no idea if I should post this under the a non-64 forum section, but it seems to be somewhat the same issue.

Has anyone found a solution to this? This seems to be the only issue I haven't been able to solve after 48 hours of using OpenSUSE.

If I chose the ATI HDMI device in YaST as first sound device, the sound comes out from my headset.
If I play a test sound on the ATI HDMI device in YaST, my USB speakers plays it.
If I under (KDE) Configure Desktop -> Multimedia test it, there is no sound at all.

Everything works just fine under Windows Vista and 7.
My Graphic card is a ATI Radeon HD5870.

Google hasn't made me any smarter yet. Out of ideas here.
