x1400 driver Problem

I can't get 3d to run on my laptop with a radeon x1400. I have tried servile things I have found on this forum, but no luck. The only attempt that has not resulted in os reinstall(4 of them)is from the directions at:

ATI - openSUSE

But when i try to input the commands into the terminal. it suggest i need to superuser permissions, but i'm logging in using the root. oh and I very limiter computer skills.
