Question Screen resolution issues

I run open suse 11.0 , my GPU is Nvidia GeForce 7300 GS with 256 mb of memory. My problem is screen resolution 800 X 600 that some games or applications use. Every time a game or an application has this resolution my monitor displays that the resolution is "out of range" and telling me that it has 81 Hz instead of 65 Hz

My nvidia driver is 185.18.14 and if necessary i will post my xorg.cong file as well.

How can i set my xorg.conf file to accept the resolution 800 X 600 without getting the error "out of range" ?

PS: do you think is wise to use nvidiaX server setting as root to set the refresh rate and resolution?

Check settings in Yast - Hardware - Graphics and Monitor

or use: sax2 -r
in a su terminal

Thank you for the answer, i have used yast and got to Graphics and Monitor, but since i never used this module can you tell me where to look and apply the changes so i can get rid of the screen error when using 800 X 600 as a screen resolution.

This memory is your GPU YES?

You should be setting the screen to the size of your actual screen, whatever that is? eg; 1024x768 or 1440x900, this in the section Resolution
The monitor = This should be set to what you have CRT or LCD. Your actual manufacturer may be in the list, or you may have to use as many do Generic LCD--
When you click OK, you should be able to try the settings.
But you need to logout and back in for the changes to be applied.

Yes that is my GPU`s memory .

Well i did open Graphics and Monitor inside Yast and i can see that the actual settings are present:

resolution: 1280 X 1024 SXGA(i suppose it stands for my LCD monitor) and 24bits
monitor : GSM LG ELECTRONICS L1918S it is also added from a large list of monitors but if i go to LG section of the list my monitor type 1918S is not present(the last version is L1811S). One more thing to add: in the list there is a category called LCD that has an arrow beside it and in that list there are plenty of resolutions using the 60 and 75 Hz refresh rate. Should i use it?

Then i have reached the Sync Frequencies tab :
for vertical is between 50 -75 Hz
for horizontal is between 30 -83 Khz

My Nvidia X Server settings shows at the resolution that i have to choose between 60 and 75 Hz .

Do you thins it is wise to set the horizontal sync freq to maximum 75 as the vertical sync freq ? And another thing inside the Nvidia X Server settings my LCD monitor is configured as a CRT (weird ...)

Almost certainly this is the best option!
60 and 75 Hz should be fine, works for me.

That was my assumption as well. In the list i did have 1280 X 1024 at 60, 70 and 75 Hz and i have selected the resolution 1280 X 1024 at 60 Hz (the lowest value). Do you think that the value of the refresh rate will be notified by me when using the computer? In other word is that a big difference between 60, 70, and 75 Hz refresh rate?

Your LCD manufacturer will have a recommended refresh rate. If you are slightly under fine, but don't go over. @60 you will be fine and probably up to 70 will be OK.
Not sure it will make such a noticeable difference for normal viewing.
