I typically recommend users setup 4 repositories to help them installing Linux applications. Only 4 repositories. No others. The 4 I recommend are OSS, Non-OSS, Update, and Packman. There is guidance for installing those 4 here in openSUSE-11.1: Repositories/11.1 - openSUSE-Community Again only OSS, Non-OSS, Update, and Packman. Adding more can add problems and one needs to be an average to advanced user to identify and sort such problems. Only once one is completely confident of their ability to identify and sort problems that can arise from having more than just those 4 repositories (repos) should one add more than the 4.

In particular do NOT add videolan as it is known to have incompatibilities with packman repos.

Once those 4 are added, then go to YaST > Software > Software Management and replace the Novell/SuSE-GmbH packaged/crippled versions with packman packaged versions for libxine1, xine-ui, smplayer, vlc, kaffeine, mplayerplug-in, libffmpeg0, w32codec-all, libxvidcore4, libquicktime0. Also install flash-player.

In particular I find smplayer is an excellent player for avi files.

If you have OSS, Non-OSS, Update and Packman repositories setup, when you go to YaST > Software > Software Management, and when looking at an application version number, if you see "pm" in the version number, that means it is a Packman packaged version.

Hence for the applications I mentioned ( libxine1, xine-ui, smplayer, vlc, kaffeine, mplayerplug-in, libffmpeg0, w32codec-all, libxvidcore4, libquicktime0 ) ensure that they have "pm" in their version number.

In case you have not discovered, you can search for the applications in those repositories in YaST by going to YaST > Software > Software Management and changing the "filter" to "search".

(Sorry, don't mean to repeat what oldcpu said. I didn't realize he wrote a response while I was typing. )

If there is a newer version once you add the repository, when you click on the package in YaST, it will say Upgrade. Otherwise, you have to change the vendor (which repository the package is coming from) which is actually pretty easy. When you click on the package, at the bottom right (in Gnome, and under the Versions tab I believe in KDE), there will be a list of repositories to choose from (dropdown list in Gnome and radio checkboxes in KDE). Once you change the repository to Packname, click the Reinstall button for that package. Once you have done this with all the packages you wish to change, simply hit the Apply button and all the packages will change vendor.

Hope that helps!
