Well in the repo you need to check the x11-video and matching kernel module.

I can't see what's in there, do you want me to load the ati repo to have a look?

In nvidia there are versions 01 and 02
Is that the same for you
01 = for older cards
02 = for newer cards

I couldn't just see info on this in the ATI pages

It's OK I see there is just 01

you need the x11-video

and the ati-fglrxG01 (either default or pae) depending on what kernel you use

If you don't know, just check.

the x11-video-fglrxG01 is still installed. I tried the kmp-default kernel module which installed, but still get the same result. The other two modules kmp-pae and kmp-trace give dependencies errors in yast when checked (requires some kernel but no provider).

Check if you have linux-kernel-headers

and I always have kernel-source also

then re-install the ati stuff if the above were missing

I don't like being a quiter but is it time think about rebuilding the system? It is an ugly solution, but it is expedient, and I know more or less how much time it is going to take and what will be the end result.

I know what you mean. It would take me about 1hour to re-install and bring everything back to completion keeping /home as is.

It's up to you
