FYI : One more info : I realized that gconf-editor comes with Gnome, but can setup parameters quite away from Gnome.

On a machine with Gnome and XFCE, I could use gconf-editor in an Xfce session as much as in a Gnome session

Thank you for the feedback, it's nice to know when suggestions result in a solution.

As for your remark, indeed there are things deeper in Linux - if you follow my automounting DVD link, you'll see an example (HAL configuration using XML).
