Most printers are part of a series; is there a driver for an earlier model? I've been using a printer with the driver for the model before it for four years and haven't found anything that it is supposed to do that it doesn't.

Further to John's advice, I would have a look at:

OpenPrinting database - Printer: Canon Pixma MP530

It mentions that the MP500 driver may be ok to use.

Try plugging it in, and then configure with CUPS interface:

http://localhost:631/

Click on 'Admin' --> 'Find New Printers' --> follow the instructions...

If that doesn't work for you, you can also use proprietary (paid for) turboprint drivers. See this thread.

rusrob55;

Look at this page for the link to the Canon MP500 drivers:
http://openprinting.org/show_printer...on-PIXMA_MP500
You will need two, the common and the one for the MP500. Be sure to install
the common first. If you have an x86_64 system there may be one additional
step. You may need to create a link in /usr/lib64/cups/filter/ to the canon
filter in /usr/lib/cups/filter/ .

deano is right: turboprint will drive this printer

ZEDOnet | Printer Driver | TurboPrint Linux

you will have your printer running in < 5 mins if you download and install turboprint:

Canon do not offer a linux driver for this printer

Canon

Turboprint is a nice little company, OK, but last week I connected a MP530 to the MP500 driver on 11.1 x86_64 and it worked (only did a testpage, but haven't heard the guy since, so I assume it works). The idea should be to get things working without all kinds of external needs that we have to pay for (and therefore are not available to the universe).

The Canon PIXMA MP500 gutenprint driver is included with current CUPS installation, so there should be no problem getting it up and running. Let us no how you're going...
