Default Canon Pixma MP210

This worked very well for me.

I retrieved the latest cvs source for sane, compiled and installed it (11.1 x86_64). Ran the scanner config in YaST and bingo.

Kooka yields resolutions of 75,150,300, and 600 (grey or color. 600 will produce a jpeg file ~32 MB in size for a scanned image of 8.5 in, by 11.5 in. while 75 will produce a jpeg file ~600 kB in size. Scanning at low resolution is relatively fast while higher resolutions are slower yet quite tolerable time wise.

As far as the printing end, well I've had good luck with the MP180 driver and gutenprint-simplified. Printing is relatively quick for general documents and images.

All in all not a bad buy considering that it was classified as being unsupported when I took it out of the box yesterday.

I should mention that I installed this over top of the sane rpm's in order to preserve system configuration scripts. It's also worth noting that it is best to conserve the installation paths. Despite the fact that configure reports that building a shared library is the default, the package builds as a static library which won't work, so be sure to specify the building of a shared library if you want it to work. I'd have done a full job of patching the srpm, but I haven't the time for that.

thanks for that; you sound a very seasoned user; what's your background?

the reason I asked about info sources is

OpenPrinting - The Linux Foundation

is the best central info on printing;

they would be most pleased if you update any info on your make of printer/scanner

Yes you can check there. You can also check on the gutenburg site as well as the cups site. Of course you would have to go to the sane site insofar as the scanner portion of this all-in-one is concerned.

Hi everyone,

I have used Canon PIXMA MP210 on both openSUSE 11.0 and currently on 11.1 64bit.
To successfully install and use your Canon PIXMA MP210 for both printing and scanning, take following steps.

Step1. Install GIMP ver.2.6
Step2. Go to Official Canon Drivers and Software
download Linux drivers for mp210. Note only the rpm
package, not deb !!
Step3. Unpack the files
Step4. Navigate to the guide** folder and follow the
instructions on how to install drivers for both printing
scanner functions.

Good luck,
tolaye

I have had same success with Pixma MP190 printer/scanner combo. Took the 32-bit drivers (rpm) from Canon's site, installed, and just had to symlink pstocanonij from /usr/lib64/canon/filters/ to /usr/lib/canon/filters/. 32-bit libpopt was the only dependency required.

As for the scanner end, sane-backends 1.0.20 worked fine, which I grabbed from the Factory. The scanner rpms from Canon are useless here.
