Default Help needed configuring HP f4280 printer/scanner

I'm using OpenSUSE 11.0 and I've hit the wall trying to get this new USB
HP f4280 printer/scanner to print. I've read loads of web pages and
lost track of all the "fixes" that I thought might have helped. There
is so much cups documentation that I am suffering information overload!

I have installed and deleted the printer a few times via Yast & cups
(localhost:/631). I have the correct HPLIP/HPIJS driver installed
(version 2.8.7), but no joy.

With xsane it scans perfectly and by using the printer's own controls,
it prints the scans perfectly, but it refuses to respond to any print
command from the PC. This includes test pages from the HP printer
manager. This gives a message stating "Device communication error" on
each failure. The fact that I can initiate scans tells me the USB
connection is probably not the cause.

Running "hp-check" gives the error message:
"/etc/cups/cupsd.conf file not found or not accessible." Could this be
the cause of the problem? I haven't been able to find a fix for this
via Google. I have restarted cups a few times but that hasn't changed
anything.

Can anyone please walk me through what I need to do to get the PC and
printer working together.

Many thanks
Geoff Beale

Hi
Have you run hp-setup as root user?

Hello Malcolm. Thanks for the reply.
I just did as you suggested. I get the same error messages, and still
can't print from the PC.

Anything else I can try?

Hi
I missed the bit about the cups conf file missing, might be worth
re-installing cups and the hp drivers via YaST, then rerun hp-check,
then use hp-setup.

That didn't help either. The report about cups conf being innaccessible
disappears when running hp-check as root.

There is nothing wrong with the printer, scanner or the USB lead as I
got it working OK on a Windows machine. Any more ideas?

Thanks

Trying to fix this error I screwed up my system so well I had to do a
reinstall. Miraculously the printer now works fine. Thanks for the
help

Hi
I always make sure the peripherals are connected and powered on during
the install. Maybe it wasn't during the first one?

Glad you have it all working though :-) Did you run hp-setup to
configure?
