Default SynCE on a iPAQ HW6515

Hi.

My wife has recived as a gift a brand new HP Jornada 545 last week and I've been trying to deal how to make it work on OS 11. I've read some place that it's fully suported on linux (this I doubt it).

I'm using GNOME and my "uname -a" says:
Code:
Linux linux-fl56 2.6.25.11-0.1-pae #1 SMP 2008-07-13 20:48:28 +0200 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
my "lsusb" is standing for:
Code:
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 03f0:1016 Hewlett-Packard Jornada 548 / iPAQ HW6515 Pocket PC
and my "dmesg | grep ipaq" tells me the following:
Code:
drivers/usb/serial/ipaq.c: USB PocketPC PDA driver v0.5
ipaq 1-1:1.0: PocketPC PDA converter detected
usbcore: registered new interface driver ipaq
ipaq ttyUSB0: PocketPC PDA converter now disconnected from ttyUSB0
ipaq 1-1:1.0: device disconnected
ipaq 1-1:1.0: PocketPC PDA converter detected
The only useful thing I can see in the Misc Menu is a Multysync GUI Icon which asks me for some group and whe I put a group (let's say: Pocket_PC) the when I click "edit" it asks me for 2 members but only shows "File Syncronisation Plugin".. here I'm stuck.

However, Ive found in the wikki this nice Synce - openSUSE HowTo but it was meant for OS 10.2 and 10.3.

On the other hand, I've also found these repositories made for OS 11 :=) from MasterPatricko Index of /Linux/OpenSuSE/repositories/home:/MasterPatricko:/synce/openSUSE_11.0/i586 (who BTW, I've already PMd to ask for some help).

I'm afraid that if I follow the wikki howto and if something goes wrong, theb I will not be able to uninstall the packages, on the other hand, if these packages, are already built for OS 11 ... which ones should I install? and then the next question, How do I configure/sync my ipaq? and my last question will be... will there be an option to synchronize it by clicking an icon? or it must be made all in the command line?..

Lots of questions I know but I need some ideas as I've no experience with PDAs.

Kind Regards

Luis

seems obvious to me that no one else here has one of those..

have you tried HP's product support?
https://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...&lang=en&cc=us

or, maybe give google a try....this search string
"HP Jornada 545" linux
returns 3,750 pages in english

which includes, as number one hit, from AnyTux.org "not compatible"
source: <http://www.anytux.org/hardware.php?system_id=984>

my guess is you are forced run a second rate OS...but, let HP hear
the question anyway (because if no one asks they have to assume that
no one cares)..

I have an HP iPAQ 4705... but I installed linux on it and the
incompatibilities changed to another sort... not that I really minded.

Thanks a lot DenverD

This is a very useful and kind answer.

I will really follow your advice

I already tried Ubuntu 8.04 and Mandriva 2008.1 with no avail

Kind Regards

Luis

Edit: I think the best is to buy a linux PDA and stop fighting with gadgets made for M$
