I love Ubuntu. It makes an excellent LiveCD. I keep one around for different reasons and I pop it in on occasion and just play with it. My problems with Ubuntu start when I install it. My two main problems are that updates seem to always break something and the software in their repository is old.

Configuring Ubuntu was much easy than configuring openSUSE at first. I think that if I had started with SUSE first it would have been easier. Yast makes things so simple once you get use to it. I wonder now how I ever did without it.

Adding/removing software is about equal on both. I really can't see how anyone would think Ubuntu was easier.

Ubuntu has more accessible information, I think. I can usually find an answer to any problem either on their forums or their helps. Maybe it's just me but I have a more difficult time finding answers to openSUSE problems. Depends on the problem, for sure. The more difficult problems seem easier to find for Ubuntu.

I think overall Ubuntu deserves it high rankings. It is easy to use and configure for new comers to Linux. Like everything else, it's not for everyone. Thank goodness we have choices.

I agree that the repository contains older versions of applications which is probably one of their weak points. I haven't had an update break anything yet though (unlike when I was using Gentoo).

I haven't fooled around enough with openSUSE to see what the latest versions of applications are compared to the Ubuntu repositories. Also, I don't know how well openSUSE is about backporting updates to older versions of openSUSE.

I am curious, though, to see how openSUSE moving to an 8-month release cycle is going to pan out. I've been thinking 6 months seems short but the idea behind that does make sense (to take advantage of new developments and significant changes in addition to new application versions and stability because each version going into the repository is built off of a single point of reference).

Oh, and the LiveCD has saved my butt more than a few times (BSOD = boot to Ubuntu Live, open Server, copy My Documents to server, attempt fixing things...)

openSUSE is much better in that regards for me. I can always seem to find the latest versions on the Build Service.

The prerequisite to successfully using SUSE is having been blessed by a higher-level entity to find the path to enlightenment. (Reference to the WM not intended.)

It's possible to be enlightened in any subject matter if you are prepared to apply yourself.
If this means I can successfully use SUSE, great. I'm all ready to apply myself.

Getting answers a lot faster doesn't mean that they are always right answers. Don't base your judgment on quantity. Base it on quality
