Enable editing in Tech News

It'll be nice to be able to edit posts in the tech news subforum. Why is it disabled anyways? I sometimes forget to post a link to a story and have to make a second post just for that in the thread. Or while typing fast, I click on reply and see after that various typo's in my post which I can't correct at all after that, or add additional info to my post

That's really stupid not to allow editing in the tech news subforum

imo, not typing too fast, spell checking, and thorough proofreading
(including making sure referenced URLs are included, and valid) are
all excellent means in overcoming "really stupid"..

IIRC, editing is disabled in all forums after 10 minutes due to the NNTP
issues. Are you talking about that or is the edit not working right
after you make a post?

IMO, you're being and idiot once again with your flawed criticism. Like you never wrote a whole post, forgot to add something to it (or something just popped in you mind *after* you posted that you would very much like to add to the post), right?... right

No, it's completely disabled in the Tech Forum, as in you click on post and there's no way to edit it - the button is not even there

That'll be great. It's not only me that makes mistakes and I've seen many others where they forget to add something and need to post again just to add it, or sometimes their posts are with (spelling) mistakes which they can't correct at all.

You obviously don't read the Guardian. News is supposed to have spelling mistakes in; that's what proves how 'new' it is.

FYI you can always edit for 10 minutes after you post. I suggest that proofreading before posting is good practice. Of course, I'm not perfect and when I see I made a mistake, I can always post a followup message.

Here are the reasons for the editing restrictions. First and foremost, if unlimited editing is enabled, and there are replies to postings, an edit to the parent message could negate the validity of any responses and could potentially be dangerous to someone that is reading through the thread and takes actions suggested in responses that are no longer applicable to the original message or problem. In simple terms, here is an example....an extreme example for certain, but it gets across the point:

ORIGINAL: I love fishing
RESPONSE 1: Me too! I take my wife every weekend.
RESPONSE 2: It's my favorite pastime
RESPONSE 3: Wanna get together sometime?

Now if the original message is changed to: I love pornography and orgies.

See how the context and apparent meaning of the replies changes?

Another reason for the 10 minute editing restriction is that our gateway to the NNTP interface runs every 10 minutes. The NNTP protocol doesn't support editing existing messages so NNTP users will never see any edit that happens on the web. This could be problematic, again, because as the thread goes on, web and NNTP users will think they are talking about the same thing but won't be.

Life is full of compromises and when we set up these forums that was one compromise that everyone involved could live with. Edit within 10 minutes or just post a follow up message. Nothing is lost.

Kim, I wasn't talking about unlimited editing. I was talking about the fact that one can't edit his posts in the tech forum... AT ALL. There's no "edit" button when you click on reply - try it yourself as a "normal" user.
