opensuse.org.nntp.test would be nice for those of us that choose that route.
That would make this a basic test message then. Sure hope it doesn't post
gazillion times.

one joins EVERY forum, downloads EVERY header, and then searches
locally....right?

Seems relatively clear to me openSUSE Forums - Forums FAQ: openSUSE Forums FAQ now how to make people read faq's or TC's well I guess that is another problem all together.

Thanks for the link. I was hoping for a group and not a thread. To find a
thread in a news reader you have to d/l all the headers in a group. You
have no idea which group the thread may be in so you download all the
headers in all the groups whether you are subscribed to them or not.

Not even related to clear for me. After reading the FAQ several times -you
have to admit I had to read it at least once to get the settings for Knode-
I still didn't know where to post a test message. I had no idea that I'd
have to do a search for a thread on "test" in
opensuse.org.no-support.general-chit-chat to find what I wanted.

Maybe it's just because I'm an old fart and have been playing on the Usenet
for so long, but the first thing I try to do using a new news-server is
make a post to that server's test newsgroup to make sure my settings for
sending and receiving are correct. This has a tendency to keep mine, and
others, oopsies and needless test clutter from showing up OT or in
inappropriate groups. And although an obscure thread in o.o.n-s.g-c-c is as
good an argument for the bit bucket as any I've ever heard, it is not
nearly as easy to find in a news reader as a test group.

This is why I made the suggestion of a test group here in the
comments-suggestions group.

Given that NNTP search capabilities are built into the NNTP client, not
the server, that makes logical sense to me. You don't subscribe to
content with the client, the client can't very well search it.

Sad. One of the oldest and best parts of the Internet.

When I first started playing on the Internet there was no WWW. There was
email, ftp, telnet, archie, listservs, etc. But the best part. The place
where you had the most fun and could get into the most trouble was the
Usenet. You could, and still can, find *anything* in some newsgroup on the
Usenet be it discussion, reference, FAQ's, pictures, movies, programs, even
often humorous and almost always colorful flame wars.

Way too much fun.
