funny login after monitor change

I changed monitor, realised that I had to adjust X11 settings when trying to log in, restarted with vga, logged in as root, ran sax2, logged out, logged in as user, everything fine, but next day initial screens before the login screen do not show, what am I missing ? Is there a chance of damage to my new monitor due to out of range frequencies ? Thanks.
