smilies and i suppose some/all of the web side's text decorations (bold,
underline, etc) come across in nntp in their non-graphical form.. i wanted to post to the "NNTP test thread" using the web interface a message to learn how the items would look, comparing the message in nntp vs on the web.. here is what i did, and why i am now crazy: - used the search function seeking "nntp test" - which found a thread in General Chit-Chat beginning with the subject of "How could this be used?" 10-Jun-2008....that thread mysteriously gets a new subject "Test" on 10 July, and another "NNTP test thread" 18-Jun-2008.. ok, so i have found the correct test thread to post to...and go down and click on the bottom post "69_rs_ss Re: testing... 23-Jun-2008, 09:17 PM" and make a quick (and very short) reply...i then click to see my post DenverD Re: "How could this be used? Today, 08:36 AM" and instead of showing it to me it shows me the root post from 10-Jun-2008 Why?? fact is, it seems the web interface has EATEN my post...it is listed in the thread's tree view, but can't be seen WHY?? ok, so i figure maybe i should pick one of the newer posts to reply to, and pick "vendion Re: NNTP test thread 06-Aug-2008, 03:59 PM" and it TOO takes me back to the root "How could this be used?" 10-Jun-2008.. WHAT am i doing wrong...there appears to be a LONG thread but none of the postings can be viewed...and, when i try to post to the root the interface accepts it, and lists it...but won't let me see it..??? oh on!! now i just went to the nntp side and see that in fact, my posting _shows_ there, and can be read....perhaps firefox is teasing me? i mean, i see "DenverD Re: How could this be used? Today, 08:36 AM" in the web interface's tree view...and, the subject appears to be a link, and in fact is a link to http://forums.opensuse.org/general-c...ml#post1857481 which, if i shove THAT link into Konqueror i can see my post....BUT, if i click on the subject line itself in FF it goes to that URL but STILL i only see the root post...not my own?? is this a firefox fault or a web forum interface fault? -- DenverD (Linux Counter 282315) via NNTP crafted by Thunderbird 2.0.0.14 in KDE 3.5.7 under SUSE Linux 10.3 2.6.22.18-0.2-default #1 SMP i686 athlon |

I have noticed though that for some reason on the larger threads, if you are using the threaded mode it for some reason pulls the original post when you are trying to reply to a child post in the thread. I'm going to try and play a little in the web side and talk to some of the other staff and see if anyone has figured out why that happens. I'll let you know what I find out. |

thanks, because from here it seems impossible.. -- DenverD (Linux Counter 282315) via NNTP, Thunderbird 2.0.0.14, KDE 3.5.7, SUSE Linux 10.3, 2.6.22.18-0.2-default #1 SMP i686 athlon |

your reader doesn't recognize smilies and replace them with a graphic, you will see the text. Readers like Knode have the ability to recognize the emoticons and show graphics. Either way, it's not a big deal as graphic or text, it's recognizable as the same thing. Quote:
Linear is the default display mode for these forums and all messages show in linear mode. When you view in threaded or hybrid mode, sometimes messages in deep threads don't show. To get around this, change your viewign mode. Doesn't matter from what to what, just change it. Once you do that you should be able to access all the messages. Like I said, it's a bug that's hopefully being addressed. In the meantime, I would suggest sticking with the default viewing mode of linear. If you really want threaded mode, just be aware of that gotcha on deep threads and what you need to do to get around it. |
