Hi,

I have an iMac, and i'm trying to setup a triple boot(Mac, Windows, Linux).

I used rEFIt and GParted to boot and create the partitions for the openSUSE.

But when I try to install the openSUSE 11.2, in the installing process, it came up "error messages".

the error messages are like:

cannot download xxx files.
or
file have been edited by someone and is not save to install.

so what should i do?

btw, can i boot openSUSE from a usb linked external hard?

thanks in advance.

I loaded 11.0 distro that I downloaded from a mirror site onto my laptop. After searching I found the correct program I was able to install it in my X-term. No problem other than I had no clue what I was doing. What I do remember is the message was :install successful. I got brave and bought a HP6000 wireless printer. I downloaded the hplip-3.9.10 and a big list of dependencies appeared. I wrote them down and downloaded them one by one. Every download greeted me with a download failure. I shut off the computer and came back to it later and when attempting to download again I got a message that the software was present!? A reboot after each download proved that the software was there and now I have a printer that works like a charm over wireless. My question is - have I got a problem with YAST that I need to fix? Everything works fine - I just didn't know if this was normal or not. Thanks

Some weeks back, I cloned my 11.1 with Clonezilla, in anticipation of a distro upgrade and to have a backup in case of failure.

I upgraded to 11.2 using a clean install. Prior to that, I backed up my docs and some other things that I thought important. Unfortunately, I backed up the wrong address book. Thinking I was looking at a current backup, I actually backed up a 2 or 3 year old file over and over again. I never looked where I was supposed to: in ./kde

However, the address book file must be in the cloned partition. Is there any way to get only that file out of Clonezilla? I ran it just now, looking for a way but did not see it. I also was confused as to how to restore the clonezilla image as a whole. I could, as a last resort, put an old hard drive in a pc and restore the image to it, if I can use a smaller (though big enough for the partition) hd as receiver of the image.

Please help me get my address book back. Oh, is it possible that I am still looking for the wrong file name for kaddressbook's data file?

Since installation, I have never been able to open my CD/DVD drive. I can read from it fine if I reboot and put something in it before SUSE comes up and it works just fine in WinXP. I just cant find any way to open it while I am in SUSE. The button on the drive doesn't work, and for example if I am trying to install something with YAST and it has the eject option, that doesn't do anything either. Any ideas?

Question about the message. Can I assume correctly that every package from the repos is safe to import the key and install?

Because I'm concern about the statement contained in the message like:

.....importing the key into your keyring of trusted keys allows the key owner to have a certain amount of control over the software on your system.

I don't want any features of any installed modules having control of my server. I always want to be able to know and/or notified if there changes need to be made.

Does the "Updater Applet" have control over update notifications of all the software on my system including the repos?

Hi everyone, I'm still a newbie with Linux OS and I have been using Suse for about 1.5 years now. My first version I used was 10.3 and it as a disaster for me. I did get really good at installing the os though and learnt a lot by trial and error. I have been updating versions all along and have just installed 11.2 with the KDE version and I think this is an awesome OS. I now have 2 of my puters on Suse, and My laptop I change back and forth.
As I am a migrant from windows it is important to me to have a system GUI that will work from the start because I am on the beginning of a long learning curve here. I have never been good with the terminal, but I am trying to learn in my spare time. Its not as scary as it looks..lol. I have even installed a couple of suses on friends spare computers so that they could see what they are missing out on. For the most part they were quite impressed as well, will they change over? I'm not sure just yet.
I guess my point here is that a lot of people are like me, they are fed up with windows, but are afraid to make the change to another OS, because they just don't know what else is out there. Suse has made that change very easy for me and I have always been able to find help or the instructions I need to get me through my problems through sites like this. Now that I understand what open source is, and how it works, I thank all of you for helping me to make the change. I can see that this is only possible through your dedication and hard work, (and possibly your hate for windows lol). I hope that I can learn enough to contribute something to open source one day as well. As I learn more every evening, I am hoping to eventually be confident enough to delete my last windows hold out puter and never have to run a virus/spyware scan again. Thank-you all for giving others the freedom to change, and have another choice.
Ty, Chris

I use WINE to run Dreamweaver8 only. On 10.3 and 11.1 I added the wine repo installed wine and wine-doors. I would install Dreamweaver8 with wine-doors, use my license key and import my sites that I exported previously.

Now I have installed 11.2 on a fresh HDD and I have access to my 11.1 /home partition and after problems with winecfg and wine-doors I simply copied my 11.1 .wine folder to 11.2 created a entry in the menu editor and Dreamweaver8 works great.

On with the problem solving so others might be helped.

First when I run winecfg from terminal the wine dialog comes up I only enter my name on the about tab click apply and ok here is output.

Then when I try to run the installer I get this.

Code:

Enter wine-doors in terminal the dialog comes up I enter my name and check box that I have valid windows click ok and progress bar reports app installs after geko dialog disappears.

Hello all, I have a Hauppauge WinTV Nova T 500 digital tv card, it worked fine in 11.0 & 11.1 under KDE 3.5, I had to put a file called dvb-usb-dib0700-1.10.fw in /lib/firmware but now that does nothing in 11.2. I've tried setting it up in YAST but that doesn't work either. When I fire Kaffeine up and select Digital TV the scan tab is greyed out. Can anyone help? I'm running 11.2 x64 KDE4.3.

I recently had to repair my video driver settings (as seen in this thread: Help! Screwed up my video settings - openSUSE Forums

Now it's working again, but...whenever I try open some URLs, my browser crashes--whether I'm using Firefox 3.5.3 or Seamonkey 2.0.

The URl where I know this happens every time* is:

Roarke, Gail

(That's my author page. It's a pen name.)

*The browsers have crashed this way a few times in the last couple of days, but it wasn't util today, when I tried this one repeatedly and it crashed every time, that I realized it was specific to this URL (among others, possibly).

I can go to the site's main page with no problem. I can open the various catalog pages (by genre, by line, etc.) with problem. I can even go directly to my titles with problem.

But if I try to access the URL above (or any particular author's page), my browser crashes every time, without fail. Either browser. The screen goes black and then the Suse log-in page comes up. I type in my user password (which I don't ordinarily have to do when I start the computer) and it restarts. And a terminal window opens (for my user account, not root).

I have no idea why this happening now. It never did before my video driver issues, so I assume they're related somehow. Anyone have any idea how? Or how to fix it?

I encountered the problem with severala WEP "protected" wifi's. Any one having the same problem and found a solution to it?

I haven't tried it on WAP Enterprise. Should I expect problems there two?

Used to run 10.3 on this laptop without problem. I want to upgrade to 11.2 but the live CD gives me this trouble so I'll probably postpone the upgrade.

I've installed 11.2 on 3 machines so far and it's looking good. One is a white box AMD64 tower, the others i686 notebooks, a Toshiba Satellite and a Dell 700m. In all case I opted for a new install but preserving /home.

Sound just worked on the notebook computers. The tower has no sound device. I also installed restricted formats software via one-click on the Dell and MP3s and MP4s play fine.

The only tweak I needed was to change the hostnames to my liking after automatic configuration.

A few glitches:

On the Toshiba which uses an external USB HD (the internal one is broken), it failed to import the fstab from 11.1 automatically and so suggested formatting /home. A click on the manual import fixed that and it then suggested formatting only /.

YaST failed to start from the menu in one session. It just bounced the cursor for a while and did nothing. I could see that kdesu /sbin/yast2 processes were left around. Probably something to do with authorisation caching. A restart fixed that.

YaST also failed to save my DNS domain on one notebook so local FQDNs would work but not short names. /etc/resolv.conf was missing a search line. Entering YaST network devices, and saving again fixed that. Who knows what glitch caused that.

No more permission problem on CD/DVD like in 11.1. Good.

Quite zippy (though these machines all have 1GB RAM). Good.

Not bad for a start. The real test is when I upgrade my workhorse over the holidays. It has many services running so I'm debating new install vs upgrade. Moving to ext4 is an attraction I must say.
