Nice article.
When I took a computer to my walker-bound mother in rural Oklahoma a
couple of years ago, I put Linux (opensuse) on it. She hadn't used one
before and didn't even know that her computer, Yahoo and the internet
in general were different things, but she loves her Linux PC. She now
complains if she has to use Windows at the library or at her sister's
home. I put Linux on it selfishly because I didn't want to be getting
rid of viruses on a PC for someone new to computers. I didn't expect
it to be easier for her to learn how to use.

exactly, i've said before here, but here is once more: i helped an old
grandma i know buy a box with no OS, loaded it with openSUSE and gave
it to her (without the root password for the first year or so) now she
is a life long convert..
no way she will ever go back to Redmond...she makes fun of the other
old ladies who complain about the last round of malware they pass
among each other, etc..
