Testing leafnode

Hi,

I got leafnode-1.11.8-1.x86_64 and I'm testing it, for nntp access.

I got this error:

By the way: the groups have no definition, as we thought:

/var/spool/news/leaf.node/groupinfo:

opensuse.org.feedback.forums.comments-suggestions 1 1 1278762332 -x-
opensuse.org.feedback.forums.support-information 1 1 1278762332 -x-
opensuse.org.help.applications 1 1 1278762332 -x-

The "-x-" is the definition of the group. The placeholder is there, but
not filled in.

It is impossible to use leafnode, it aborts continuously while
downloading :-/

Thus, no pan either (no offline mode).

it should work as an off-line reader (though i've never tried it)...
the nntp setup section reads "You can download your messages locally
so that they are available when you are working offline." and there is
a button marked "Select newsgroups for offline use..." so..

a benefit i really enjoy is newsgroups, openSUSE fora, email and mail
lists all have exactly the same "look and feel" (shortcuts, text flow,
spelling, draft saving, filters, etc etc etc--feels like 'home')

What about using the openSUSE(fied) spec file and other bits from the
1.11.6 src rpm, just need to change the version number, dump the 1.11.8
bz2 file and the rest in /usr/src/packages/SOURCES then use rpmbuild.

Hi
I've built it on the OBS with some spec file tidying up. The only thing
for 11.3 is the following "binary calls gethostbyname(). Please port the
code to use getaddrinfo()." I need to investigate this....

I've tested on a VM and it's working

Put it to download the entire base of messages, or at least a fair
number, like a thousand messages from each group. Mine, each time it
gets a response "220" from the novell server, hiccups and halts. Until
you get it, it runs fine.

I know, I see that in the header. I tried it the first, and I use it for
email.

This reply uses thunderbird.

And it works.

But an advantage of leafnode for offline use is that I can use it together with any client, and keep
only one copy of the message database, not a copy for each client.

Leafnode is a daemon. All messages are downloaded, then you see them with Thunderbird, Pam, Alpine,
Claws... no matter. I could even use it for local message body search.

I could combine it with a client like pam, which has a powerful scoring, but no offline storage. Or
Alpine, a client I use a lot for email.

But no scoring. It is not easy to track your own posts with replies.

Hi Carlos
I'm not up to speed with the config options (never used leafnode), what
do you configure to pull in all the messages? I just played with the
two you had problems with;

- opensuse.org.feedback.forums.support-information
- opensuse.org.help.hardware.64-bit

understand, but until you find/fix that 220 bug it is not gonna help
you much...just suggesting until leafnode works, try tbird..

hmmm: while reading this post, look up near the top right of the tbird
pane, see a block with a magnifying/spy glass? you can flip that to
search on sender, subject, subject or sender, etc..

type Carlos and wait a second (no enter or space required) and see a
list of all your posts (as Carlos) in this newsgroup/forum..

if you set it so, all messages you send will be in the "Sent" folder
(mine is in the 'master folder' named "Local Folders") where you can
search on (say) 'opensuse-project'...i guess it is possible to track
replies...just not with scoring..

ps: it is not my intention to try to _sell you_ on using tbird...just
trying to help you find a temp solution to no leafnode...btw, i
enjoyed using Pan for a couple of years until a "new and improved"
version came out which forced me to do things another way....i tried
several others until i stumbled on tbird which does _most_ things for
most of _my_ text message needs...oh, i used/really liked Sylpheed for
a while, can't remember why i quit it..
