community transition

'we' (as in 'we' of the openSUSE Community) don't really know what the
future holds..

but, it _seems_ to me that there has been a sharp drop off of Novell
employees contributing/posting to the mail lists/forums since the
NYPost scoop..

i wonder what happens if (as has happened too often in recent weeks)
the forum (or mail lists/irc/wiki/etc) machines/nets need TLC to
return to work...

do 'we' have non-Novell community hands with access to the levers and
gears controlling our ability to coordinate, communicate, and etc?

just thinking out loud: do 'we' need to make some backup plans
_before_ the communications networks go down and _then_ learn our
corporate sponsor has lost interest in 'we' and has decided to save
those man hours for more profitable endeavors ??

i know it is unpopular with some, but maybe 'we' could cobble together
some backup comm via everyone's friend, whose name begins with a big
blue G ??

just sayin': its easier to plan a backup while the lights are still on.

it is beyond my ability to understand how it could be FUD to suggest
there should be a reconstitute plan for the forum/mail list/wiki since
their total workings (software/hardware/control) lies inside a
corporation whose profit driven bean counters _might_ prohibit another
dime going to the (say) electricity needed to run it..

rather than FUD (imo) it is prudent contingency planning to assure
Community persistence..

if the contingency does not arise, it is wasted energy, but still not
FUD...

if the comm goes down a recovery plan could be beneficial in the speed
at which the Community is reformed..

ymmv, but to me it seems better to plan a path than to hope for the
best and kill what may be our only opportunity to plan ahead by
throwing out the FUD label.

FUD is being spread by the uncertainty of what will happen to openSUSE, of course. what you see here are different reactions to that.

but i think, DenverD, that there will be enough time to find other alternatives if that need should arise. i can't imagine anybody turning off the lights over night. whoever finally buys all the linux stuff will have an interest in this community. changes may happen, and perhaps many will want to migrate somewhere else, but unless the buyer turns out to be apple, in which case the OBS would become "suse app. store" and you'd have to swear loyality to steve jobbs to be able to post on this forum, there'll be time to adjust. (and how difficult is it to create a G-group with 'opensuse' in the name, which would attract scattered remnants of this community?)

WOW! Good thing I'm over 18. Bookmarked that for sure.

I might have to print one of those HOWTOs since openSUSE is my only OS. It would be hard to read it if Grub breaks and I can't boot.
