Default End of openSUSE-11.1 support (end year 2010)

Please note this announcement from the mailing list: [opensuse-announce] Advance discontinuation notice for openSUSE 11.1

    From: Marcus Meissner <meissner@xxxxxxx>
    Date: Mon, 18 Oct 2010 13:36:19 +0200

    Dear openSUSE users,

SUSE Security announces that the SUSE Security Team will stop releasing updates for openSUSE 11.1 soon. Having provided security-relevant fixes for the last two years, we will stop releasing updates after December 31st 2010.

As a consequence, the openSUSE 11.1 distribution directory on our server download.opensuse.org will be removed from /distribution/11.1/ to free space on our mirror sites. The 11.1 directory in the update tree /update/11.1 will follow, as soon as all updates have been published.

Also the openSUSE buildservice repositories building openSUSE 11.1 will be removed.

The discontinuation of openSUSE 11.1 enables us to focus on the openSUSE distributions of a newer release dates to ensure that our users can continuously take advantage of the quality that they are used to with openSUSE products.

This announcement holds true for openSUSE 11.1 only. As usual, the openSUSE project will continue to provide update packages for the following products:
    • openSUSE 11.2 (supported until approximately May 12th 2011)
    • openSUSE 11.3 (supported until approximately Jan 15th 2012)
    • openSUSE 11.4 (currently in development, to be released in March 2011)
    • for the next two openSUSE releases plus two months overlap period.

Please note that the maintenance cycles of SUSE Linux Enterprise products and products based on the SUSE Linux Enterprise Server operating system are not affected by this announcement and have longer life cycles.

To learn more about SUSE Linux Enterprise products, please visit NOVELL: Patch Finder . For a detailed list of the life cycles of our Enterprise Products please visit Novell Support | Support Lifecycle and http://support.novell.com/lifecycle/...ts.jsp?sl=suse

If you have any questions regarding this announcement, please do not hesitate to contact SUSE Security at <security@xxxxxxx>.

It's too bad they can't hold out three months longer. This would allow people to upgrade from 11.1 to 11.4 with the maximum support cycle, instead of 12 months.

Yes it would be logical to do so. People continuing to use 11.1 while 11.3 was available for nearly a year did so on purpose. Well, this will mean 3 month with handmade security fix and avoiding pdf of unknown sources. Will survive even this.
Still.......not a big achievement from their side. Somehow hoped they would have done like with 11.0.

Better than having the EOL when the 11.4 comes out, there should be about a 1-month overlap to give people time to get it, work out some initial bugs and updates between the latest freeze and the release.

I think Fedora does this and it sounds like a smart idea.

The downside is how much would that stretch the developer's efforts, if at all?

I would have no hesitation paying money for SLED if it had the same 3rd party support that openSUSE has. But it does not. And while one can sometimes pick an openSUSE repos that is close to that of SLEDs configuration, it does not always work, and it can be annoying when it fails.

Definitely my view as a home user is SLED will never be acceptable to me, until they can obtain the same 3rd party support as openSUSE (with packages built specifically for SLED and not some openSUSE approximation).

This is relatively new? No? When I look at a typical Packman mirror:
    Code:
    http://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/misc/packman/suse/
    I see:
    Code:
    Index of /pub/linux/misc/packman/suse

where in this case sle_11_sp1 is supported. But no previous versions of sle. How long is the sle_11_sp1 support planned for by packman ? I'm assuming this is only possible because of the new build service.

    I'm definitely very tempted.

    this is kinda exciting news..

i've often thought about giving SLED a try but never have..
in fact, had just about decided to either run 10.3 'forever' or jump
to ?? (something else) with a longer life...i'm just not going to get
into a 12 month merry-go-round of install, patch, pray, hope, repatch,
    repray, etc etc etc..

i have Debian Lenny on a sandbox but have not found a roundtoit so i
can "get used to it" (and break my 10.3 habit--which is exceedingly
smooth since the updates do not exist and therefore can NOT break my
    system)..

I would be interested in seeing a SLED thread in Chat, where we discuss the relative merits of SLED. I note from your sig you have the 2.6.32.23 kernel. I think that kernel version is too old for my mother's new PC (I'm getting an HP P6510F for her, and I think the wired ethernet card and the motherboard on the HP 6510F work best with the 2.6.34 or newer kernels). Still I may be interested on installing it on my PCs which have less demanding requirements.

I note SLED site here: Linux Desktop: SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop by Novell Checking the price in Euro its only €100 SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop - European pricing I think I can afford the €100. Would that be €100/year for continued support?
