Solved now for every one with the same issue gust follow the instructions on the site i posted above and then restart and go back to the yast->networkdevices ->network settings ->under the global options tab set network setup method to user controlled with network manager and this should do the trick

Just an FYI - I added the madwifi repository and everything worked great except I am running VMware wks beta 2 and the madwifi driver was unable to provide a bridged connection to windoz VM's. I downloaded this version of madwifi: http://snapshots.madwifi.org/madwifi...current.tar.gz and followed these install instructions found in the ubuntu forums: Vmware Edgy Madwifi Ath0 Networking Virtual Machine - Ubuntu Forums

Now I have wireless and a bridged connection to my VM's.

for me, just worked a madwifi snapshot. No RPM from repository did the job.

I'm having similar issues with every machine I have converted to OpenSUSE 11. Atheros cards that worked fine with madwifi 0.9.3.3 in suse 10.3 don't work in suse 11 with ath5k and compiling 0.9.4 madwifi fails with numerous errors! I am converting about 2-3 machine a week to Linux from infected winders systems and vista and I REALLY need to get a solution.

Part of the problem that I have found shows up with the use of other chipsets. There is this change between the old HAL method and the use of mac80211. The mac80211 system is unstable IMO. I get iwlist access points but can't connect. Authentication errors show in dmesg.

If I try to remove ath5k and mac80211 system and compile with older style drivers, I get compile errors! Stuck between a rock and hard place!

    for me worked following:

    1. uninstall madwifi
    2. blacklist ath5k
    3. download latest snapshot from snapshots.madwifi.org
    4. compile and install and reboot

now, you should have ath0 set-up (though it might not work), but you should be able to set gateway etc etc in Yast.

now, it's just matter of wpa_supplicant if needed.

There is good instruction page on madwifi.org
I took a part after installing driver, and worked.

I've also got a sh*tload of problems with the AR242x pci express card. It took me at least an hour to get the stuff working.

Really, we shouldn't get such cards to start with. Anyhow, I've blacklisted ath5k, removed the madwifi stuff, which initially was installed.

I took the svn of today, compiled; checkinstalled it and installed the rpm.

The ath_pci.ko, ath_hal.ko and wlan.ko load just fine. However, dmesg reports ath_pci: HAL doesn't support MAC revision 0xe2

    Still no ath0.

So I took the branch snapshots.madwifi.org: madwifi-hal-0.10.5.6 as it looks like the branch isn't merged in the trunk yet, according to the #1192 (Hardware Support: AR5007* (AR2425 chips)) - madwifi.org - Trac

Again compiled, checkinstalled and installed it.

I now got ath0 available. Will see if it works.

Seriously, despite the tremendous work, we shold boycot this kind of crappy hardware.

Wow, bear with a neophyte please:

I installed all the programming and src packages as instructed in previous posts and finally got rpmbuild to execute with one small and presumably inconsequential non-fatal error exiting from the tmp directory. It appears everthing executed perfectly, but now I'm lost as to what to do next.

    Still no wifi.

Under my (Yast) Network Settings I still have AR242x 11abg adapter installed, but not connected. I followed the instructions for adding a new Wireless (ath_pci) however it doesn't work, and I cannot delete the original Adapter (as I think the instructions were indicating).

If you help me get this wifi working I'll eat a bug - I LOVE Opensuse, beats Winbloze hands down, but again, there's a major learning curve for me. I'm planning on dual-botting Opensuse on my desktop, should be worlds easier than this Acer laptop.

    Help??

    John

So much for Atheros - bought a D-Link WUA-1340 USB Wireless Card (Frys Electronics, $29.99) and it worked right out of the box, just some minor tweaking (adding Home network, DHCP, etc.) and afterwards it brought up all area access points including my own.

Give up on Atheros folks, at least until Suse includes it in an update patch.

    Color me gleeful.
