K3B - Dual Layer DVD detected as single layer

K3B says that my drive supports DVD-R DL writing. K3B shows it only having 1 layer.

brasero doesn't tell me anything except the DVD isn't big enough to burn a 7GB ISO

Are you sure that's DL media? That media code maps to SL media.

That's a pretty good looking DVD. Hmm, I notice that it says Side A. So maybe it's not DL but rather DS and you have to turn it over to record the other side? Which is not as convenient as DL because you don't get 8.5G of continuous storage but you do get double the capacity.

Maybe you can get a refund for the unused ones if they came in jewel boxes. The 9.4 GB is another giveaway that it's DS. DL only gets 8.5 GB due to the reduced capacity of the second layer. DS however gets 2 x 4.7 GB.

Many versions ago, a SUSE release came on a DS (pressed) DVD. Source RPMs on the reverse side. Confused the heck out of us when it wouldn't boot with the wrong side up (or rather down). And of course the labelling could only go on the inner rim, in small type.

Yes, look at the bright side of it, someone else looking who finds this thread will not have to struggle so long, so your pain had some benefit to others.
