Can you indicate what alsa and pulse rpms you have installed (plus content of one config file) ? ie what is output of :
    Code:
    rpm -qa '*alsa*'
    rpm -qa '*pulse*'
    rpm -q libasound2
    cat /etc/modprobe.d/50-sound.conf

OK, thanks. Nothing obvious wrong there. I note from the diagnostic script that you are running the 2.6.37.1-1.2-desktop kernel on your openSUSE-11.4 and your hardware audio codec on this Lenovo G570 is a Conexant ID 506e. Typically the hardware audio codec is decoded better, so that "506e" is a bit confusing. I see the SuSE-GmbH sound packager updated alsa on this codec: ALSA: HDA: Add a new Conexant codec 506e (20590) .

I also note your 2.6.37.1-1.2 kernel is not the latest. I recommend you update your kernel. There are updated sound modules that come with an updated kernel. Then test your sound If that kernel update does not help, then IMHO you either need to update alsa to a more cutting edge version (I can help with that) or write a bug report on openSUSE-11.4. IMHO you should likely write a bug report anyway, as this should 'just work' and it does not.

Note updating the kernel could break a proprietary graphic driver install (and also a proprietary wireless driver install) so be prepared to handle that eventuality if you are using proprietary drivers.

Do i really need to update the kernel?
I never did that kind of operation before.
I found a post regarding kernel update:- http://www.suseblog.com/want-the-new...ade-tutorial/; shall I go for this; or is there any easier way to do this (using yast or something like that)?

No, you can wait many months for a new distro release with a newer kernel. In the meantime you can use your desktop's mixer or alsamixer to mute the speakers when using headphones. This is what I did when my lenovo SL510 was fairly new (as an update of SL500) and had the same problem as you have with your G570 (update of G550?). After some time, my problem was solved with kernel upgrade, as it obviously takes time for linux kernels to "catch up" with manufacturers' new hardware.

As @oldcpu suggested, really fixing the problem requires either a bug report (this may already exist even from other distros) or install a newer kernel which can be done from other openSUSE repos (avoids compiling your own kernel). That may fix your problem, but may introduce other issues so it's best done on a test system (or another system partition if you have the disk space). If you update the kernel on your current system you should backup everything important to you.

kmixer is the only sound mixer I can find in my system.
In that there is only one control for playback devices.

Yes, ok. In that case you can switch between Headphones and Speakers with KMix > Settings > Audio Setup > Speaker Setup tab > Connector [dropdown list].
