If you want updates you'll need to add the Update repo'.

I forgot to save the terminal data. So, this is what I remember. All statements entered and successful. "314(?) packages to update. 8 new.". Terminal showed download and install for those packages. Firefox is now at v3.59 --- Looks like that did the job, thanks.
I'm still going to wait and see if I get another update for anything. I'll look for any updates on suse news(or where?) and see if they appear on updater applet.

The updater icon changed to software update available(not security). When I clicked on it, it requested the admin password. After, it didn't do anything. When I went to yast to check for online updates. It showed software updates available. So, I clicked to download and install.
So I take it, things are better for you now?

Personally, one of the first things I do in a new install is tell the updater applet NOT to start at boot and then I reboot. From then on I set up everything in Yast Software Management. And I run most of my updating from there too, as I use development repos. But zypper up works fine on a basic system once you have it all set up.
