I did update of all packages to get latest 4.1 and now I'm not able to login due to:

startkde: Starting up...
kdeinit4: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib64/libkdeui.so.5: undefined symbol: _ZN7KGlobal12setAllowQuitEb
startkde: Could not start kdeinit4. Check your installation.

I've tried to update again several times but it didn't help. Please help

Same thing has happened to me in today's update.
I've tried making changes to xorg.conf but no luck.
I've tried the suggestions at this link

I installed kde3 using yast from the console line. kde3 does run. Maybe a future update will "bring back" kde4. I did not uninstall it so it'll update in future.

I do get the kdeinit4 error message on boot. Then I go to system menu and switch to kde3. Then log in. I'm going to hunt how to make that my default so I don't have to manually switch.

Same problem here...I was running 4.1 fine, until i tried to update some apps manually. I guess that is not the Linux way of doing stuff, but when I was using windows, I always tried to have the newest updates as soon as they come up...

Anyways since that KDE won't load. Tried reinstalling from the One-click-installer, but problem persists.

X server runs fine and everything. I even get the same error as the user above:

PS. also when i try to manually run kde from command line should i use "kdeinit4" or "startkde" or "startx". Because i get a different error from each one... "startx" gets the furthers.

I installed gnome from command line and it works relatively well, so that means the problem is very KDE4.1 specific, but i would really like to have KDE back (mostly for dolphin which i find so much better than nautilus).

I will try yet another reinstallation of KDE4.1

alright i fixed, although not sure exactly what did it. I had 2-3 reinstallations of KDE 4.1 and 4.0.4 both using one-click-installs and manually with yast2. But nothing did it.

at the end i reistalled the kde-session and the kde libraries only and that fixed it. Not sure which of the two it was but i bet on the session. So if anyone else gets symbol look up error try reinstalling the kde-session.

Now my KDE looks like **** since i think it has left over parts from 4.1, but at least it runs.

I am having a similar problem with KDE 4.1.3

How did you re-install the kde-session and kde libraries ? This Novell Bugzilla (No. 421816) -https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=421816#c7 also quotes a similar solution.

I had a similar problem. Here (Should I upgrade to KDE4.2? - openSUSE Forums) is what I did to successfully repair a KDE 4.1.3 install, am writing from KDE 4.1.3 right now.

vi /etc/ld.so.cong

add these lines:

/lib
/usr/lib

then run
ldconfig
