    hi
    i am vamsikrishna
    i am new to linux environment
    i know java programming and did in windows
    now i converted from windows to linux (opensuse)
    how far can i program in linux.
    is java enough or should i learn some thing more for programming in linux?

    Depends on your needs. Java will be fine for many things, but maybe not
    best for all.

    Java will probably server you well, as you are experienced with it.

    • Python is one of the other cross-platform languages used a lot in Linux.
    • Mono (the .NET open source framework) has a lot of controversy surrounding it so unless you have a desire for it probably would be just as well to avoid it. (I am a .NET programmer at work so I am working on getting familiar with Mono).
    • Qt is, I believe, C++ based and is used for KDE-orientated programs while Gtk is focused on Gnome


    But, as Java is what you are experienced with it is probably fine to start with that and get used to the "nuances" of the difference between Windows and Linux.
