Forum updates and improvements

vBulletin puts out updates on a regular basis. I try to keep these forums as up to date as possible. The updates usually come once every month or two. Each time there is an update I need to redo some customizations I've done like reputation points, favicon, default landing page, etc.

With each update there are a number of bug fixes, security fixes, and enhancements such as the new WYSIWYG editor included in today's update. The updates usually go pretty smoothly but once in a while, the update will break something. Rather than revert to the previous installation, if it's not too serious, I'll try to fix it, find a work around, or just enter a bug with vBulletin and wait for the next update.

I always install on a development server before installing here on the production server so I can do some testing. If it generally goes OK on dev, then we roll to production. I always hold my breath for a few days after a new update, however, and wait to see if the forum users find anything broken/wrong.

One of the most scary things is uploading language files. Of course I don't read most of the languages and I can't take the time to go through each xml file before installing to see if it overwrites anything that should be in English. Sometimes it does and I have to go manually fix that, usually by removing a custom phrase from the system.

Nothing is perfect and we fix things as we go along. I'm grateful for the folks that point out the problems by saying "hey, look at this" instead of "you stupid idiots! You obviously don't know what you're doing". :-)

    Some forums do support image resizing option even when images are big. The current editor blindly links the images and doesn't provide a way to resize images.
    So you could always leave a request here I think: Michal Hrušecký » ...about me, Linux and OpenSource, or make one in openFATE perhaps: https://features.opensuse.org/, but what I have found using KDE anyway is that Gwenview, works great for this purpose (of resizing), posting just the right size you want in SuSE Paste from what ever original graphic you may have.

    Sorry for posting in a confusing way .i need to retain the original images,not resize them.
    If you upload images to imgur.com it provide you links which will give you thumbnails and on clicking them you can get the enlarged images.This will help me incase i need to post images, the images "would not go out of bounds" of the webpage in the forums.
