Hi Folks..

I have had a server downstairs running SAMBA and nfs for my mixed network...I use
NFS almost exclusively for my *nix machines...and have had NO problems at all...I
mount manually and as a user.

Until now.

With 10.3, starting with the alphas and continuing to today with beta factory current, I can
only mount my nfs exports (from the server) as ROOT on the test machine running 10.3.

All of the settings are the same...both the server and client "know" about each other in the
hosts file....my options in the fstab are the same as the other machines....everything is
the same...however when I try to mount as a user (I have "user" specified in the fstab as
in the other machines...etc.), "permission is denied" by the server...

I double checked everything..and still the same
I have an account on the server that is EXACTLY the same as all of my other machines...
and on the 10.3 test machine.

The only thing that I can think of that is different is that, there is something different about the
client on 10.3!

If I am root, I can mount it just fine.

This is NOT a big deal...as down the road, I might actually consider this an advantage keeping
some in this household from mounting an nfs share! It's more out of curiosity wondering
what is different this time, why...and how to get around it.

The man pages for fstab, nfs and mount were of no help...

I have had this set-up for YEARS and have had no issue like this...so I'm curious as to
what's up!

Thanks in advance for anybody who might know...

Oh...10.3 is generally running great on my test machine...through today's factory updates,
a lot of bugs have been squashed...looks like a good release coming up.

If no one on our forum knows (or no one posts) the answer, you could log into freenode on the irc chat channel, and go to: #opensuse-factory, and ask your question there. Dependant on the time zone, etc ... it may be a while before you get an answer.

Thanks, oldcpu....I might have time tomorrow when I can sit at a computer! Anyway, thought I would post here too...looking forward to the release...I did limited testing this time due to being out of town a lot and a busy wife working on a Ph.D...

Thanks for the reply!

I have exactly the same problem. And also on the openSUSE mailing list someone other have the same problem, but no answer yet.

And for me it is a disadvantage and no advantage that user can't mount nfs shares, if I want to forbid users to mount something I just don't add the user option in fstab. Is this a bug in openSUSE? I don't know, if yes I likely will write a bug report.

Maybe someone here have a solution.

As the first poster wrote. I can mount the nfs share as root but not as user. The user option in fstab is set. Also it works under openSUSE before 10.3 with the exact same fstab entry.

If a user try mount the nfs share the follwing error occurs:
mount: 192.168.1.1:/Share failed, reason given by server: Permission denied

OK this error might suggest the server denies the access. But I'm sure, server settings are right, because it works with openSUSE versions before 10.2 and also with some other Linux clients.

I just see, that a bug report is already filled: <You must search the bug by your self, because: Sorry, but you do not have enough posts (2) to post any links. This is to reduce the amount of spam posted at our board.>

So it is a bug in openSUSE 10.3 and it seems an update may take some time, because of a security audit. But with the informations from the bug report, I think I can avoid the problem with setuid root set for mount.nfs.

Great to hear that it's filed...as I said...it's not a real problem for my operation....since
I'm really the only one who mounts nfs at the network...but if they have a fix, then
great...we'll wait for it.

I have found that this is true from a 10.3 to 10.3 machine too....my server is running 10.2...so
just about everyone will run into this and a fix will come down the pike....

Does this relate to nfs version 4 some how? Just wondering...but not concerned...glad
to see that we'll get this issue looked at too....
