Hi,

I'm having trouble getting the ati graphics drivers to work on the new opensuse 10.3 beta 2 release. I found the latest ati offerings out there - ati version 8.40.4

ati-driver-installer-8.40.4-x86.x86_64.run

I used it to generate an RPM for suse distros. This resulted in an rpm entitled

fglrx_7_1_0_SUSE102-8.40.4-1.i386.rpm

After installing this rpm (seemed to work), the instructions on the screen indicated that I should

1. login as root
2. switch to runlevel 3
3. run sax2 -r -m 0=fglrx

and all should be well. sax2 tells me that there are no screens with the correct configuration available. I don't know what the "correct configuration" is. In fact, I don't know what this error message means, but I suspect that this driver, as new as it is, is still not new enough for 10.3 beta 2.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!
John

Firstly i hope you're just using 10.3 beta 2 for testing. Otherwise get 10.2.

As for the driver you could try downloading the driver here you can read more here

Hmmm...well you got further than I have. Just installed beta 3, and the rpm complains that it wants libstdc++.5.so (beta 3 seems to have libstdc++.6). Tried compiling the module from scratch and suse seems to be missing files from the kernel-source, it says it can't find version.h. So right now I am stuck with the vesa driver.

I take back my earlier post. I reinstalled from the DVD of beta 3 last night (I used the gnome cd before) and everything went without a hitch. Downloaded the newest ATI driver, built the module (didn't make an RPM) and ran aticonfig --initial and everything came up great, even got compiz working.
