I downloaded the 5 CD iso's for 10.1 RC1 thinking this will be cool once I get it installed. I can get xgl up and running and I can try out the gnome desktop (have always used KDE from 9.1 up to 10.0). The install went great except for one annoying (and important thing in my opinion). My wireless pci card was not detected. In previous versions (9.2, 9.3, 10.0) my card was detected no problem (ralink chipset). What's going on I am thinking to myself? I get to the release notes and I see a paragraph that says somthing along the lines of ..."the RALink rt2500 kernel module does not work with the new kernel and the new rt2500 module is not finished yet..." This is VERY annoying! A step backwards. Both my desktop and my laptop have wireless cards with the RaLink chipset because it was known to work in the past versions. Who knows when they will get that module back into the kernel?!
In the meantime, does anyone know if the madwifi thingy will work with wireless cards using the RaLink chipset? Other than this annoyance everthing looks good so far (although I have not had a lot of time to try and break things yet). Gnome looks and feels strange compared to KDE, but I suppose I will get used to it. Planning on installing the latest Nvidia driver today to get xgl and compiz up and running on my desktop. |

Relax....the ralink module is open source (I think) and has been a part of the kernel
for a while now...it won't be dropped. I'm sure that there is a technical issue that isn't solved right now...this is still prerelease software. I should be working by the time the official is released (I hope! I have one machine with a ralink chipset too!) |

Bobmeister I am sure you are right. But it's still kinda annoying
![]() On a plus side I have gotten 10.1 RC1 with gnome desktop working with Xgl and Compiz. It looks really nice! Using latest Nvidia driver with FX 5200 card. I just followed the instructions to the letter as spelled out at http://en.opensuse.org/Using_Xgl_on_SUSE_Linux. |

Cool...I have one computer that has the graphics that will do it (with NVIDIA
CARD)...and I might give it a go once I get the final installed on this machine... but if it slows down my machine (as the earlier composite settings did before XGL) then I'll take the performance over the eye candy anytime... |

With Xgl enabled and compiz enabled on my system, performance is not an issue at all. It is quite responsive. Pleasantly snappy. I'm running an AMD 64 Athlon, 1 gig ram, Nvidia FX 5200.
I tried running the old composite manager built into KDE when I was using 10.0 on the same machine (running KDE desktop then, gnome now) and I found it to be buggy. The shadows and transparency looked nice but it never behaved quite correctly and it seemed to be using a lot of resources. Xgl with compiz puts that old transparency and shadow business to shame. I have no problems with boot up time now, application load time or with overall desktop snappines. Was using the virtual desktop cube lastnight to get some things done. At first I thought that it would never really come in handy, but I was using it last night and I found myself liking it. Wobbly windows are just eye candy but it still looks nice. One thing I have not figured out yet, how to make inactive windows automatically go transparent..... |
