I just tried to update my Beta 9, to RC1, and it failed completly. No worry I thought, I'll just format my root hard disk, and install a fresh RC1.

I get to the third disk, and it says a package couldn't be found on the medium. Ok, retry? SEGFUALT!!

Oh goody...

I try again, same install settings, this time it's a completely diffrent package. Well I'm not stupid, lets just ignore... SEGFUALT!!

Oh this is lovely...

Ok, ok, I'll just put a min system, and then install all the files threw yast. I try to start yast in the console after setting up the minimaul system. SEGFUALT!!

Were the hell are my SuSE 10.0 disks...

did you check the cd's before you went for the install. I can remember that I had problems once installing SuSE. It turned out the one of the downloaded cds was corrupted. I downloaded the cd again and the installation went smooth.

I fresh installed 10.1 RC1 and everything went great. It recognized almost everything out of the box. Only thing it did not get out of the box was the Intel wireless which I just installed everything having to do with that in Yast and it started working by itself after that. I am very impressed since this is a brand new Dell laptop e1505 / 6400 with all kinds of funky stuff like dual core, and GM945 vid card and the newest Intel wifi card.

Now I just need some applications to install with Yast. I really miss gkrellm. I also haven't found anything to get my mp3 and xvid support installed.

Well, this looks more like my problem, I did a memtest, and my 256 stick was showing errors, so it's most likely do to that.

FORGIVE ME GREAT LIZARD!!

Oh, I can get your mp3's working!

Least I could do.

Download xine-lib, configure, make, make install, and SuSEconfig it. http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/xine/xi...ib-1.1.1.tar.gz

Now you need some Win32 codecs incase you want to play WMP9 stuff, and other evil stuff. http://www.mplayerhq.hu/MPlayer/releases/c...0050412.tar.bz2
Unpackage it into your /usr/lib/win32

You may have to logout, and log back in before KDE, or Gnome will give you preveiws of encoded files.

There anything that uses Xine as a backend, like Amarok, Kaffien, and others will play almost anything, have fun.

The only glitch I had was it couldn't connect to Online Update during install, and it didn't find my Epson 3490 scanner, even though the drivers were on the add-on disk (rectified via Yast). I still need to install the NVIDIA driver.

Also, I tried connecting to Online Update via YAST, and it complained about a corrupted key.

Samba is much easier to set up, except that the firewall ports aren't opened up as part of the setup.

Cheers,

Well..I have to say that RC1 is working very well for me so far....the installation went without a hitch
(clean install) and now I added the factory repository and am installing more stuff. This is
where it was going wrong in the betas....repositories...package management in general. All of
that seems to be fixed now. Updates are still experimental...it set up an FTP for that and
"sees" it, but nothing happens...most of the "updates" on the "update" channel are test
updates anyway......I'm sure it will all work, considering how many bugs have just
disappeared from when they changed over to the new package management library a
few betas ago. I understand upgrade installs are problematic. I'm not doing those, as
I never do.

Lucky me, I guess. I look forward to this release...another incrimental improvement...

Ok, I desided to try again today.

I removed the bad ram, and made sure every disk checked out perfectly. I still got the segfualt on disk two. This is really strange becuase 10.1 Beta 9 installed no problems, so did Beta 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1... But RC 1 is driving me insane. I'm going to give it another shot, but on a diffrent computer, and see what happens.

Has anyone tried updating from OpenSuSE 10.0 Final to 10.1 RC1?

I'm thinking of giving that a shot, and see if it will get me to RC1.

Be sure and back up anything important first - updates historically don't work too well.
