I've had Suse 10.1 alpha 1 running ok on my laptop (Toshiba Satellite M45-S265 with dual boot Win XP) for a couple of weeks, decided to try the alpha 2 version. I did the function to verify the checksum / MD5 all five CDs, the install goes okay thru the last disc, then fails at the point where it's trying to figure out my hardware (I think the message is something about failing to find or probe the TV card). I don't have a TV card, and none of my hardware is listed after this message comes up. If I continue, I get a black screen with the mouse pointer.
Was something changed between alpha 1 and 2 related to the configuration / probe / whatever? No big deal, but I guess I don't want it to still be a problem in the next releases. |

check the bug reports. http://www.opensuse.org/Submit_a_bug#Searching_for_Bugs if it hasnt been filed, then you might need to file one. have you tried installing from text mode? |

I tried to run yast in text mode, and I can configure everything except for the graphics card (if I click on the link nothing happens) running yast in text mode with a module name works (i.e. yast mouse) except for yast X11 Then I tried to run sax2 in text mode, but all I get is a prompt like this sax2(1): where I am supposed to type something, but no mention of this with sax2 --help this is the bug https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=129969 I asked for workarounds here http://forums.novell.com/group/opensuse.or...D@/@article@141 but it looks like there's none. Pity, I would have liked to test alpha2 |

I have found a decent workaround, maybe it works for other people as well: start with a cd "live" distribution; I used ATMission live, I guess Knoppix would also be good save the /etc/X11/xorg.conf that the live distro is using to a flloppy/usb stick/mounted hd partition (this did not work with ATMission, btw) then boot into text mode, compare the two xorg.conf and apply the relevant changes. This worked for my Dell Dimension with a Matrox card, now Alpha2 is up and running with KDE. |
