Hello,

I am having a very (very) difficult time getting the wireless to work on my laptop. It is a Compaq Presario F762NR, running Suse 10.2. It does not see the ath0 (Atheros device)

# iwconfig ath0
ath0 No such device

# ifconfig ath0 up
ath0: unknown interface: No such devic

I know there are many threads on this, and I have followed many of them and cannot get it working. (My wired device came up no problem as soon as I downloaded the driver (nVidia) and rebooted.

I rebooted after each of the steps below, and also did them all first and then rebooted, but it did not work

I used Yast Network Manager to configure the (onboard) controller

In Network Manager it sees :

Hewlett-Packard Company Ethernet controller
Hewlett-Packard Company WLAN controller

(In the Network Manager wireless card config, I tried setting the
"Device Activation" to "manual","upon cable plugin","at boot up")

I have downloaded the madwifi drivers
(madwifi, madwifi-kmp-default).

Here is what I can see :

# lspci | grep Eth
00:0a.0 Ethernet controller: nVidia Corporation Unknown device 054c (rev a2)
03:00.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications, Inc. Unknown device 001c (rev 01)

# lsmod | egrep 'Module|aes|ath|wlan|sca'
Module Size Used by
ath_pci 96672 0
wlan 199236 1 ath_pci
ath_hal 195792 1 ath_pci

# rpm -qa | grep -i mad
madwifi-0.9.3.3-0.1
madwifi-kmp-default-0.9.3.3_2.6.18.8_0.7-0.1

#iwconfig
lo no wireless extensions.

eth0 no wireless extensions.

# ifconfig
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:1E:68:43:89:35
inet addr:192.168.1.12 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0

lo Link encap:Local Loopback
inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0

03:00.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications, Inc. Unknown device 001c (rev 01)
priceless:/home/jprice # lspci | grep Eth
00:0a.0 Ethernet controller: nVidia Corporation Unknown device 054c (rev a2)
03:00.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications, Inc. Unknown device 001c (rev 01)

Anyone have any suggestions ?

Thank u in advance

Your "grep" filter makes it difficult to see exactly what atheros you have. Is this an AR5006eg? AR5007eg? Another atheros? (there are many). To see if there is a bug report, or a workaround, for a specific atheros version, we need to know exactly which atheros.

Please type "lspci" without the filter, then manually go in, find the Atheros line, and associated lines, and copy that here (so we know exactly which atheros).

I loooked at the and the only numbers on it were

AR5BXb63, so I am guessing it is an Atheros 5xxxx series part.
The hardware works under Windows Vista

Can you check in Vista to see what it is called? Is it called AR5007eg ?

According to this page:
http://madwifi.org/wiki/Compatibility/Atheros
it may (or maynot) work ...

Atheros AR5BXB63
Chip: wi-fi.org says that is AR5006EG
Supports: IEEE 802.11b, 802.11g
Notes: Dosen't work at all.
Notes: DevID 0428
Notes: In windows it's appears like AR5007EG
Notes: .inf file information

Code:
.inf file in windows:
%ATHER.DeviceDesc.3067%**= ATHER_DEV_04281468.ndi, PCI\VEN_168C&DEV_001C&SUBSYS_04281468 //References to this Device, Look**ATHER_DEV_04281468.ndi ,an curiosity look DeviceDesc, = 3067
...
[ATHER_DEV_04281468.ndi.NT]**//more parameters referencing this device
Characteristics = 0x84; NCF_PHYSICAL | NCF_HAS_UI
BusType******** = 5
DelReg**********= 5211.DelReg
AddReg**********= 5211.reg, ATHER.reg, 5211.reg, 5212.abgmp.reg, customer3a.reg, ATHER_DEV_04281468.ID.REG
CopyFiles****** = ATHER.CopyFiles.nt, DEFAULTDESTDIRS
DelFiles********= ATHER.DelIniFiles
//and the end of file we have
ATHER.DeviceDesc.3067**= "Atheros AR5007EG Wireless Network Adapter" // look that DeviceDesc.3067 references to**AR5007EG.!!????

Notes:****It's returns Hal status 13, and sometimes hal status 3
Notes:****In Openhal the interface ath0 show up there aren't any communication, the commands like iwlist return error.
Notes:****Suported by ndiswrapper ver 1.47 (use tarball package) with windows xp driver.
Notes:****In Fedora 7, crash (kernel panic) when try to load ndiswrapper (modprobe ndiswrapper)
Notes:****Crash because default kernel limit stack to 4k. Need to recompile kernel with CONFIG_4KSTACKS disabled.
Notes:****Works on Ubuntu 7.10 with ndiswrapper 1.50 (and uninstalled madwifi modules)
Notes:****Works on Mandriva 2008 with ndiswrapper 1.47 and windows xp AR5007EG driver from www.atheros.cz
Notes:****Working on Ubuntu 7.04 and Debian Etch with madwifi r2756 + patch (madwifi-ng-0933.ar2425.20071130.i386)
Notes:****Working in Fedora 8 with ndiswrapper 1.52 and WinXP drivers AR5007EG (ath5k module blacklisted)
Notes:****fully works with Backtrack 3 Beta
Notes:****Working on Ubuntu 8.04 beta with madwifi r2756 + patch (madwifi-ng-0933.ar2425.20071130.i386)
Notes:****Work at all but need to install ndiswrapper and install inf file with ndiswrapper and than to blaclist ath5k and ath_hal with lilo...
Notes:****Fully working under OpenSuSE 10.3 on Asus eeePC using madwifi-ng-r2756+ar5007 built from source
Notes:****setting monitor mode on eeepc seems not to work
Notes:****Works in 64Studio 2.1RC, AMD64 bits kernel. This system is based on Debian Etch 4.0. Use ndiswrapper 1.47 with XP 64 bits driver. My system is a Acer 4520.
I think it may be possible to get working with madwifi. ...
