I am so close to setting up wireless networking on 10.3, but just can't take the final step. Help!

I have used ndiswrapper to install the drivers for my Belkin USG card. It seems to be setup fine on boot, and when I run

iwlist wlan0 scan

I see my access point as I would expect.

However the card won't actually connect to the AP. I have turned off encryption (temp), but the card won't connect to the AP. If I try to set the ESSID, with

iwconfig wlan0 ESSID <my-network>

it is just ignored and the reported ESSID stays as off/any.

I can see my adaptor using ifconfig along with lo and eth0.

What am I missing?

I think I have. I have added a new wireless card in Yast2. There was already a Wireless Card in there, however I can neither configure nore delete it as it says the Kernel device is not present. I have added a new Wireless device with the correct device name, dhcp settings, Wep keys etc.

Still nothing happens

check in yast what you have for the module name of the usb device. if using ndiswrapper set module name to ndiswrapper. also, what kernel are you running? if you don't know open a console and type

uname -a

YAST2 would not let me set the module to be ndiswrapper, there is nothing in the dropdown list and it just ignores/loses it if I type in ndiswrapper.

Kernel is

Linux Renton 2.6.22.5-31-default #1 SMP 2007/09/21 22:29:00 UTC i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

you are running an old kernel for starters. it should be 2.6.22.17..... i forget the rest off by heart so...

hmmm that's strange. are you sure the device picking up your access point in the usb device? you say you do iwlist scan wlan0, but is wlan0 your usb device? you may want to try adding it again in yast, as something like eth1 (although obviously set it as wireless type).

also, with device plugged in, please paste output of

lsusb -v

Got it all to work in the end. I removed and re-added the device in YAST. It seemed to be affected by chosing the correct Device and only being able to specify ndismapper as the module when creating the device not when updating it. I am now internet enabled. Even got encryption working, whoopie!

Might take a look at that old kernel now.......

well done on seeing this through. you should get a kernel update if you add all the right community repositories. you should get to 2.6.22.17-0.1-default by a normal update. but there is a later stable kernel which you can download. but i would go for the one which is in the update.

Thumbs down

Hi

I'm having just as much trouble but have used a different route. Belkin support have produced the source for the system and instructions. So far I can see my hub, it shows in kwifimanager etc, everything seems in order but

i cant see it in a browser!!!!

any help would be gratefully received.

Cheers

few things to check:-

1 ) firewall
2 ) ipv6 turned off
3 ) any encryption used is the same as the router & no typo's
4 ) Mac address filtering, if used, has the Mac address of the device added
