Hi everyone, I just got openSuse 10.3 and I am very new to the linux os. I struggled for a while and never could get the built in wireless usb (yes built in usb in new hp pavillion desktop) to detect. tried to follow tutorials, but people always explained them as if the person using them was familiar with linux. Aside the point, I gave up and grabbed a linksys usb wireless adapter i had on another computer and tried that. Luckily it detected and let me configure everything. But now the issue is that it doesnt detect any wireless networks, and if i type in the ssid and passphrase it acts as if it is connecting but fails.

I am assuming that its an issue with the knetwork manager.

Im at the end of my rope in frustration. thanks in advance if anyone has any help or advice for me.

What is the make or chipset of your on board wlan? If you could list that along with the specific technical specs of your HP laptop, that would help us in being answering your questions. As you can see below, I too have an HP laptop, and Knetwork Manager works great for me! I went through the same problem pretty recently, so I know how frustrating it can be!

there has been a problem with some drivers with KNetworkManager, i had an issue, although it was finding networks fine it wouldnt connect for the life of me. try in yast switching it to traditional method with ifup (yast>network devices>network cards>general), and user controlled with KInternet. make sure in yast all your drivers are correct in the module name (for instance mine was intel pro wireless 3945ABG card,my drivers were ipw3945, yast should have filled this in automatically). with that done, make sure it's set to DHCP. once all set up ok you could try loading KInternet, this should find your networks, if you don't like KInternet you can search for and download wifi-radar, this is the wireless program i use and is good as it stores profiles for each of the networks you connect to.

if this fails post back and we will see what we can do.

just ensure all settings are correct too.

Just a further note, the problem that some users have with "knetworkmanager" does not IMHO exist for all users.

My wife uses "knetworkmanager" on our family laptop, a Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo M7400 (running openSUSE-10.3) and it works well. In fact she finds the Linux wireless driver / knetworkmanager combination on that laptop is far superior to the winXP "equivalent" offerings (and she is a VERY big winXP fan). So much that when it comes to using wireless, she boots to openSUSE-10.3 (and only boots to winXP when she has a wired connection). ...

I don't deny some users have problems with knetworkmanager, but IMHO this is specific to certain devices and not a global problem.

i agree with you there, many people have expressed how well KNetworkManager works, yet i have heard there has been problems with the ipw3945 and iwlwifi drivers, which unfortunately is what i need, and KNetworkManager would simply not connect, after a post with nearly 40 replies i changed programs and it worked just like that so must have been KNetworkManager, i do not deny at all that it is a good program for wireless, its just it didn't work for my drivers. o well. hope you get it sorted. if wifi-radar or kinternet don't work, it won't be a knetworkmanager issue, and will be an issue regarding the set up. this will help in trying to solve the problem.

no luck on either, i am usingng a linksys wusb11 ver 3.0 as the wireless adapters, there is the usb built in to the computer but that one was the one that detected. It detected and set it up as WLAN controller, after what you said about naming it the apropriate device made me think that the drivers it is assigning to it are not the right drivers. I downloaded the right drivers but i have trouble installing and using the ndiswrapper. im going to give it another go and if i cant figure it out ill post back.

ps. how do i check to see if the wireless isnt already compatible with wlan-kmp-default or wluan-kmp-bigsmp, i was reading about that and im not sure where to look. also if in yast under software management search i find ndiswrapper and ndiswrapper -kmp default thats means they are already installed right?

yes it means it's installed if the boxes are ticked, you can check by runing a simple ndiswrapper command from the console.
