Hi, at home i have wireless internet up and running with WEP encryption, yet when i try and connect at work (WPA) it won't work. program i'm using is kinternet with traditional ifup method which has been working fine at home. kinternet keeps asking me for a wep key, and when i click shared and don't even enter a key it says connected, but i'm not.... any help would be much appreciated...

kinternet doesn't support WPA yet. try wifi-radar or knetwork manager ( if your card works with knetwork manager )

Hi, thanks for quick reply. have downloaded and installed wifi-radar and is working fine for my home network (WEP), i do notice that each time i connect i need to enter root password... why is that? is there a way to get my internet to run at startup so i dont need to do anything? for example with knetwork manager each time i had to click active scan>connect>then enter my wep kep. wifi-radar is good as it's stored my key but can i get it to start at boot? can't try the WPA yet as i wont b back at work till monday but will let you know if it works. would be great if you could let me know why i can't get it to start at boot. also, the fact it asks for a root p/w....does this mean that each time i log on net my browser has root permissions...or just the program wifi-radar?

thanks in advance, and sorry for so many questions!

Much appreciated.

Ross.

edit, just noted when i tried to click new profile in wifi-radar and clicked use wpa it asked for a driver...? im guessing that the wpa password i just put in wifi settings under key? set everything else like channel etc to auto? cheers.

unfortunately my drivers are not supported by knetworkmanager (i believe), well, it fails miserably at connecting anyway. drivers are ipw3945 for intel pro wireless 802.11 a/b/g card. fully updated with latest kernel. just can't connect at all. as soon as i tried kinternet...worked a treat!

Yes it does. I use kinternet and WPA on my laptop.

I simply set up my connection in Yast using WPA and was off and running.

hmmm, this is strange. see the problem is in yast you can only set up one default network, and my home would be this (WPA), however, whilst at work i changed this to the work network and set it to wpa, yet kinternet kept asking me for wep key, and wouldnt connect. knetworkmanager, like usual, didnt work at all. so couldnt connect. wifi-radar looks promising though, especially as you can set up profiles and ask to use wpa or not... just need to know the 'driver' field. when selecting to use wpa it asks for a driver. if you have any idea then please let me know. thanks very much.

Right click the icon in the systray, select wireless networks, scan for networks, select the network, click connect.

That has always worked for me.

yeh see this is what doesnt work. i tried that, with so many different settings etc and failed every time. knetworkmanager just doesn't connect. it fails at activation stage, when getting the IP address. as i said, hopeful with wifi-radar as DF suggested, but have to wait till monday to try that out. but will be interesting if he (or you, or anyone else of course) could tell me what the 'driver' field is for when selecting to use WPA; and whether i should fill it in, or leave it blank.

Thanks again,

Ross.

driver field is for your cards driver, e.g. for intel it could be ipw or iwl, for belkin it could be bcm43xx or ndiswrapper or RTxx
