can't help with firewall.

for wifi you have to supply more detail.

- can you do internet with M$ OS?
- can you see available networks in the networkmanager? (switch off firewall first)

if no do
- post the output of lspci
- post the output of iwconfig
- post the output of iwlist scan

Hi,

Yes i can connect to the internet on XP, and KNetworkManager can see my wireless network, it asks for my wep key, i type it in, then it says configuring device (28%), then 57% is activing IP something or the other, then it justs says connection failed and asks for IP again. Will post outputs of those commands when i get back home (at work now...)

Thanks again and will reply asap.
Ross.

Ok, apparently your card is working fine, it can see networks in the knetworkmanager and can connect with your access-point proven by M$.

Make sure your system is updated (does wired nic work?)
You have to double check the network configuration in YaST; ESSID, WPA or WEP, key and others.

If no success try to
- establish a connection closer to the access-point
- establish a connection with traditional ifup method in YaST
- establish a connection without encryption. (need to change setting in access-point too)

If neither option work other forces are bugging you. Try then to remove your wireless nic in YaST, check if firewall setting after removal, I guess it should be gone. Reboot and configure your nic with YaST and check your firewall. (best is to leave all default with external setting)

I keep reading topics related to wireless and the firewall.

Just to say. You should not need to touch the firewall at all. Just leave it as it was. urning it off, is not a good idea - I don't do that - even though I am behind a hardware firewall first.

It sounds like the device is configured in Yast - Your problem sounds more like settings between the two devices.

Make sure your wireless MAC is a trusted device in your router/gateway..?
And all the settings compare
Assign an IP address to your wireless device
It will be something like: 192.168.0.100

You should set a range of IP's in your router and assign each device by its MAC

OK, you're talking about a wireless MAC...? how do i go about setting a right IP for the wireless device?

sorry for my incompetence, not really all in the know how on the wireless front. thanks.

A MAC is specific to the device, it will look something like this:

00:50:BA:AF:12:13

You need to configure your router or whatever you are using as a gateway to the internet.
Each router is different. Look up the documentation.

Best tell us what you have, how you are connecting to the net etc..

The router I'm using is (unfortunately) one of the orange livebox's. however, i have tried to connect to a network at work which has a wireless buffalo router, ive even tried that without any encryption and still no success there, so it has to be something to do with the device setup on the machine, but i feel ive looked everywhere i can (in yast, i dont know many commands regarding networking...)

please get back, thanks.

ps, can connect to internet fine on here with ethernet, is how im typing this up.

From the release notes of 10.3
Quote:
Intel Wireless Link WiFi Drivers

Two drivers are available now: the traditional ipw3945 driver is installed by default and the new iwlwifi driver is an alternative offer. Note the following caveats:
• ipw3945 works on hidden networks. It does not survive suspend/resume cycles.

• iwlwifi does not work on hidden networks. It supports suspend/resume cycles.

You can change the default using YaST. Click "Software" -> "Software Management" and remove the ipw3945d package. Then the alternative iwlwifi driver gets automatically selected for installation.[/b]
Have you tried the alternate driver (iwlwifi)? Could be the trick you need.
