Trying to get madwifi installed on a laptop that can't connect to the internet. On my pc with internet access I went to the madwifi site and got the rpm's for 10.3. link here Within the i586 directory I got the 2 rpm's necessary:
madwifi-0.9.3.3-0.1.i586.rpm madwifi-kmp-default-0.9.3.3_2.6.22.9_0.4-0.1.i586.rpm Installing the first rpm was okay, but with the second one I got the following dependency issue that I don't understand how to read (see attachment). Can someone explain to me what the dependency issue is and what it means? |

But you appear to be using kernel 2.6.22.5-31.i586. If possible, you could try updating to kernel-2.6.22.9_0.4 and try again. Also, it may be a good idea for you to install kernel-source. If my memory serves me correctly, my wife's PC has a kernel newer (not older like yours) than 2.6.22.9, and it still works with this madwifi driver. |

I can't access the internet through the laptop, only the desktop pc. If it's possible, how could I upgrade the kernel? I was searching around opensuse.org and eventually found rpm's for a number of kernel versions, this link. Could I just burn those rpm's to cd, taking the cd to the laptop and do an upgrade like that, or is it more complicated? If it is more complicated, but manageable, how could I go about it?
From the link I found these rpm's. kernel-default-2.6.22.9-0.4.i586.rpm kernel-default-2.6.22.5_2.6.22.9-31_0.4.i586.delta.rpm kernel-source-2.6.22.9-0.4.i586.rpm kernel-source-2.6.22.5_2.6.22.9-31_0.4.i586.delta.rpm Are those the only rpm's I need? |

Not wanting to leave this thread unfinished I thought I'd write a summary in case someone should find any of the info useful.
The actual wifi card in question is a Netegriti EM-500AG 802.11a/b/g. It uses an Atheros chipset. Links: 1 http://madwifi.org/ 2 http://wiki.suselinuxsupport.de/wikka.php?...oConfigWifiCard 3 http://en.opensuse.org/Atheros_madwifi 4 http://www.softwareinreview.com/linux_opti...nsuse_10.3.html 5 http://www.suselinuxsupport.de/wikka.php?w...eKernelUpgrades (The fifth link I used to backup my kernel before upgrading it, just in case. This is NOT necessary, but was fun in a way.) Okay, I finally attempted to update the kernel. For the entire operation of getting the madwifi driver installed I manually downloaded 4 rpm's. madwifi-0.9.3.3-0.1.i586.rpm madwifi-kmp-default-0.9.3.3_2.6.22.9_0.4-0.1.i586.rpm kernel-default-2.6.22.9-0.4.i586.rpm kernel-source-2.6.22.9-0.4.i586.rpm After getting all 4 rpm's to the laptop the next step was installing them. Upgrade the kernel, install kernel sources (following oldcpu's advice - not sure if it's necessary), and then install the madwifi driver. For the kernel rpm's I installed from the console (as root, of course), but for the other two I left clicked on them within Konqueror and then on the option "Install Package with YaST". With kernel-default I installed with the command "rpm -Uvh <file.rpm>". With kernel-source I installed with the command "rpm -i <file.rpm>" (though upon reading more about rpm "rpm -ivh <file.rpm>" would have been fine too, rpm cheat sheet). Everything went fine without a hitch. From the third link: "Open up a terminal window, and just run: modprobe ath_pci" Well I found I had to be root to do this. Also from the fourth link, if you scroll down to "Atheros drivers" (not "Atheros wireless drivers"), you'll find additional info. Afterwards I checked in KNetworkManager and found wireless networks detected. So now the next step is to figure out proper configuration, and the various links above should provide the necessary info. |
